Watts to Horsepower

Puts the watt rating of an e-bike, scooter or light electric vehicle into horsepower, alongside the wattage bands that decide which legal class a machine belongs to.

Making Sense of the Watt Number on an E-Bike Motor

Every e-bike, scooter and light electric vehicle is sold on a watt figure — 250, 500, 750, 1000 — and that number does double duty. It is a rough guide to how the machine will climb, and it is the value that decides which legal category the vehicle falls into. Putting it into horsepower is how most buyers work out whether the rating is as modest as it sounds.

Conversion factor: 1 W = 0.00134102209 hp, so divide the watt rating by about 746. The European 250 W pedelec limit works out at 0.335 hp — a third of a horsepower, added to whatever the rider's own legs are already contributing.

What the Rating Actually Tells You

A legal category, not a speed

Wattage bands sort machines into classes with their own rules on cycle paths, helmets, registration and insurance. Crossing a band changes the paperwork before it changes the performance.

Continuous is what the label promises

Type-approval figures are continuous rated power under a standardised test. Peak output during a hill start can be two or three times higher and appears nowhere on the certificate.

Watts push, watt-hours carry

The motor rating says how hard the machine can shove; the battery's watt-hours say how long it can keep shoving. A big motor on a small pack is a short, exciting ride.

Where the motor sits changes the feel

The same watts through a mid-drive pass down the gears and multiply on a climb; through a hub motor they arrive at one fixed ratio and fade as the hill steepens.

Enter the rated motor wattage

Put the figure from the listing or the frame sticker into the left field — 250, 500, 750, 1000 — and the horsepower equivalent updates as you type. Spaces are ignored, so 1 000 works as well as 1000.

Confirm which number is being quoted

If a seller advertises "250 W nominal, 900 W peak", only the nominal figure has legal standing. Convert both anyway: 0.335 hp against 1.207 hp explains the difference between the certificate and the ride.

Reverse it when a seller quotes horsepower

Scooter listings sometimes advertise in hp to sound like a motorcycle. Press the swap button (↔) for hp → W: an advertised 5 hp is 3 728.5 W, comfortably into moped territory.

Notice how compressed the interesting part is. Everything a cycle path will ever legally see sits between a third of a horsepower and one horsepower, so the whole pedal-assist market lives inside a single hp. The jump that changes your life as an owner is not 250 W to 750 W, it is the step out of an e-bike class into a registered vehicle class — plate, insurance, helmet standard and all.

E-Bike and Scooter Wattage Questions

Why is 250 W the number on almost every European e-bike?

Because it is written into the rules. EU Regulation 168/2013 excludes pedal-assisted cycles with a continuous rated power up to 250 W and assistance cutting out at 25 km/h from vehicle type approval, and EN 15194 sets the test. Stay inside that box and the machine is a bicycle; step outside and it becomes a vehicle needing registration. The 0.335 hp it converts to is a legal boundary that manufacturers design right up to.

A shop lists 250 W nominal and 900 W peak — which figure counts?

The nominal, or continuous rated, figure is the legal one. Peak output is whatever the controller will pass for a few seconds before heat forces it back, and there is no standard test behind the number in an advert. A compliant 250 W mid-drive routinely delivers 600 W or more on a steep start — 0.805 hp for a moment against 0.335 hp on paper — and remains legal, because the rating describes sustained output.

How can a third of a horsepower feel so strong on a hill?

Because it is added to a rider who is already working, and because the whole machine weighs so little. A commuter putting out 100 W meets a 250 W motor and the pair make 350 W — three and a half times what the legs alone managed, on a vehicle of 100 kg all-up rather than 1,500 kg. Power per kilogram, not raw horsepower, is what you feel on a climb.

Does a 750 W motor empty the battery faster than a 500 W one?

Only if you use the extra power. Range comes from the pack's watt-hours divided by the average draw, not by the motor rating — a 500 Wh battery lasts two hours at a steady 250 W whatever motor is fitted. The bigger motor invites a heavier hand, and that is usually where the range goes, though it can also be gentler on a long climb because it is working further from its limit.

Is a 250 W mid-drive the same as a 250 W hub motor?

Identical on the certificate, different on the road. A mid-drive feeds through the chain and gears, so dropping to a low ratio lets it stay near its efficient speed on a 15 % gradient. A hub motor is geared to the wheel permanently, so on the same hill it slows, draws more current and heats up. Both convert to 0.335 hp; only one of them still feels like it at walking pace.
