Reading the BTU Number on an Air Conditioner Box
Every window unit, portable cooler and mini-split in the shop is labelled with a big BTU number — 5,000, 9,000, 12,000, 18,000. The installer quoting for the job talks in tons instead. Both describe the same cooling capacity, and turning one into the other is a single division that decides whether the box in front of you is the right size for the room.

Type the cooling figure off the label
Enter the BTU/h number exactly as printed — 9000, 12 000, 18,000. Spaces are ignored and a comma is accepted as a decimal separator, so a figure copied out of a listing usually needs no cleaning up.
Compare the tonnage against the quote
A result of 0.75 against a quote for one ton means the fitter has priced something larger than the box you found. The quarter- and half-ton gaps between catalogue sizes are exactly the 3,000 and 6,000 BTU/h steps on the shelf.
Flip it when the quote comes first
If the fitter wrote "2 ton" and you need a figure to shop with, press the swap button (↔) to run TR → BTU/h and read 24,000. Same page, opposite direction.

Look at the pattern in the tonnage column: quarter-ton steps up to one ton, half-ton steps above it. That is why the shelf runs 9,000 → 12,000 → 18,000 → 24,000 and rarely stops anywhere in between. The area figures assume an ordinary ceiling height and average insulation — a sun-facing room, a top floor or a kitchen pushes you a step up.

Questions from the Air Conditioner Aisle
Is a 1 ton air conditioner the same thing as a 12,000 BTU unit?
Yes — one ton of refrigeration is defined as 12,000 BTU per hour of cooling, so the two labels describe identical capacity. The "BTU" printed on a carton is always shorthand for BTU per hour; a plain BTU with no time attached would be a quantity of heat rather than a rate.
Why do retailers advertise BTU instead of tons?
Small residential equipment lands between a quarter and three tons, so a tonnage label would be a list of fractions: 0.4167, 0.6667, 0.75. Whole thousands read better on packaging, they line up with the room-size charts the industry publishes, and the word "ton" invites confusion with the weight of the box. Tonnage survives on the trade side, where the numbers come out whole.
How many watts does a 12,000 BTU/h unit actually pull from the socket?
Far fewer than the cooling figure suggests. Divide the cooling BTU/h by the efficiency rating on the label: at an EER of 12, a 12,000 BTU/h machine draws roughly 1,000 W. It moves heat rather than creating it, which is how one ton of cooling — 3,517 W of heat carried outdoors — comes from around a kilowatt of electricity.
My inverter model lists a range like 3,600–13,000 BTU/h. Which figure do I convert?
Convert the middle one — the rated capacity, usually printed in bold or repeated in the model name. The outer numbers are the minimum and maximum the variable-speed compressor can modulate to. A head rated 12,000 BTU/h (1 TR) that reaches 13,000 in boost is still a one-ton machine for sizing and for the installer's paperwork.
There is nothing between 12,000 and 18,000 BTU/h — what do I buy for a room in between?
Window ranges do offer 14,000 and 15,000 BTU/h, but split systems jump in half-ton steps because compressors and coils are built in those sizes. For a room that calculates out at about 15,000 BTU/h (1.25 TR), a modulating inverter head rated 18,000 will throttle down and hold the setpoint more steadily than a fixed-speed 12,000 running flat out.
