What the horsepower figure on a boiler plate really means, with packaged sizes listed by steam output, heat output and mechanical horsepower equivalent.

Reading a Boiler Plate That Says 100 Horsepower

A packaged boiler arrives with a data plate reading something like "100 HP", and the number does not mean what almost anyone outside a boiler house assumes. It is not shaft power, not the size of a motor, and not comparable to the horsepower figure on a vehicle. It is a rate of heat, and translating it into mechanical horsepower is the quickest way to see how far apart the two units sit.

Conversion factor: 1 bhp = 13.15475619 hp, because a boiler horsepower is 9,809.5 W against a mechanical horsepower's 745.69987 W. That plate reading 100 bhp is 1,315.48 hp of heat — 3,450 lb of steam an hour, roughly 3.35 million BTU/h.

What the Number on the Plate Is Telling You

A heat rate wearing a mechanical name

Boiler horsepower measures heat going into steam. Nothing rotates, nothing is lifted, and no shaft is involved — the unit borrowed the word "horsepower" in the nineteenth century and never gave it back.

Thirteen mechanical horses in every boiler horse

9,809.5 W against 745.69987 W gives a ratio of 13.15. A boiler badged 15 hp — one of the smallest packaged units made — already outranks a 197 hp engine in energy terms.

Thirty-four and a half pounds behind each horse

The rating is anchored to water: one boiler horsepower evaporates 34.5 lb of it an hour. Multiply the plate figure by 34.5 and you have the steam output the pipework, traps and feed pump have to handle.

A catalogue index more than a specification

North American boiler ranges are listed by horsepower — 15, 20, 30, 50, 100, 150 — the way shoes are listed by size. It finds you the model; the pressure, feedwater temperature and turndown decide whether it suits.

Checking What a Boiler Quotation Is Really Offering

Two quotations can both say "100 HP" and describe quite different machines. Converting the plate figure gives you a common scale to compare them on.

Type the horsepower number stamped on the plate

Enter it exactly as printed — 15, 60, 250, 500. The mechanical horsepower equivalent appears as you type, and stray spaces in a figure copied from a PDF are ignored.

Read the answer as heat, not as engine power

A 60 bhp boiler converts to 789.29 hp. That is the rate at which it moves energy into steam. It says nothing about a motor, a pump or anything that turns — treat it purely as a magnitude check.

Swap when the heat load arrives in mechanical horsepower

Press the swap button (↔) for hp → bhp. Old drawings and imported equipment schedules occasionally state a thermal duty in plain horsepower, and this is the direction that turns it back into a boiler size.

Two boilers marked 100 HP are not the same purchase: the horsepower figure fixes the output but says nothing about design pressure, turndown, burner type or heating surface. The old firetube convention of five square feet of heating surface per boiler horsepower is worth checking on the drawing before you compare on price.

The right-hand column is what makes the point. A 100 bhp packaged boiler — a unit small enough to be craned through a factory doorway — carries 1,315 mechanical horsepower of heat, more than two heavy-haul truck engines put together. At the top of the range a 500 bhp unit reaches 6,577 hp. Nobody in a boiler house would ever describe the machines that way, and that is precisely why the plate is so easily misread by anyone arriving from the mechanical side.

Why is a boiler horsepower more than thirteen mechanical horsepower?

Because the two units were built out of different things. Mechanical horsepower is a rate of work — 745.69987 W, Watt's estimate of what a horse could lift. Boiler horsepower is a rate of heat — 9,809.5 W, the energy needed to evaporate 34.5 lb of water an hour. Divide one by the other and you get 13.15. They share a word by historical accident: one boiler horsepower was roughly what a mill engine of the 1870s consumed per horsepower it produced, so the names lined up even though the quantities never did.

Does bhp on a car specification mean boiler horsepower?

No — on a vehicle, bhp is brake horsepower, mechanical horsepower measured at the crankshaft on a brake dynamometer. A 300 bhp car has 300 mechanical horsepower. A 300 bhp boiler has 3,946 of them, as heat. The abbreviation simply collides, so write "boiler hp" or the words in full whenever both readings are possible, and check what the document is about before converting anything at all.

Should I compare boilers in bhp, BTU per hour, or pounds of steam?

Pounds of steam an hour is the most honest figure for a steam plant, because it is what the process consumes and what the pipework, traps and feed pump are sized on. BTU/h is the right currency against a burner, a fuel bill or a heat load already in thermal units. Boiler horsepower is shorthand for both — 1 bhp is 34.5 lb/h and about 33,475 BTU/h — and it is how catalogues are indexed, so it stays useful for finding a model. The rule that matters is that two quotations state the same basis before you compare them.

What is an EDR rating and how does it relate to a boiler's horsepower?

EDR is equivalent direct radiation: the square feet of old cast-iron radiator a boiler could serve, on a convention of 240 BTU/h per square foot for steam. One boiler horsepower therefore corresponds to about 139.5 ft² of steam EDR. Small commercial and residential steam boilers in North America are still catalogued in EDR alongside BTU/h, which is how a radiator schedule and a horsepower figure end up sitting on the same drawing without either being wrong.

What does "from and at 212 °F" mean for the steam I actually get?

It is a laboratory basis rather than an operating promise. The rating assumes feedwater already at 212 °F and steam leaving at atmospheric pressure, so all the boiler must add is latent heat — 970.3 BTU per pound. A real plant feeds cooler water and raises steam under pressure, and every pound then costs more: making 120 psi steam from 60 °F feedwater takes about 20 % more, so a boiler badged 100 bhp delivers nearer 2,900 lb/h than 3,450. That ratio is the factor of evaporation, and it is why boilers are bought with headroom.
