Reading an Air Conditioner Rated in Frigorías

Walk into an appliance shop in Madrid, Milan, Seoul or Osaka and the cooling capacity on the label may not be a watt figure at all. It is a number of kilocalories per hour — in Spanish-speaking markets written as frigorías. A wall unit is "3 000 frigorías", a cassette is "6 000". Before that can be lined up against a European kW spec or an American BTU/h box, the kcal/h number has to become watts.

Conversion factor: 1 kcal/h = 1.163 W, so multiply the kcal/h figure by 1.163. A unit advertised at 3 000 kcal/h is 3 489 W of cooling — 3.489 kW, or about 11 900 BTU/h, which is the familiar 12 000 BTU class.

A frigoría is the heat removed when a kilogram of water is cooled by one degree — a kilocalorie counted the other way round. As a rate, one frigoría per hour and one kcal/h are the same 1.163 W.

Notice how tidily the frigorías ladder maps onto the BTU ladder: 2 250 lands within one per cent of 9 000 BTU/h, 3 000 within one per cent of 12 000, and 4 500 within one per cent of 18 000. That is no coincidence — the same physical machines are being described in two housekeeping units, which is why a seller can call one box "2 250 frigorías" and the next one "9 000 BTU" with neither label being wrong.

Frigorías and Cooling Capacity Questions

Is a frigoría the same thing as a kilocalorie per hour?

A frigoría is a kilocalorie of heat removed rather than added, so as a rate it is numerically identical: 1 frigoría/h = 1 kcal/h = 1.163 W. Advertisers usually drop the "per hour" and simply say "3 000 frigorías", which strictly names an amount of heat but is always meant as a capacity. Treat the number as kcal/h and the arithmetic comes out right.

Why do Spanish and Korean sellers still quote cooling in kcal/h?

Refrigeration engineering ran on calorie units for most of the twentieth century, and in markets that never switched to BTU the habit simply stayed. Buyers learned to shop by frigorías, so shops kept printing them long after regulation put kW on the energy label. The result is an advert with frigorías in the headline and kilowatts in the small print.

Does 3 000 kcal/h tell me how much electricity the unit uses?

No — it is the heat shifted out of the room, several times larger than the power drawn. Divide the cooling figure by the unit's EER or SEER to estimate electrical input: 3 489 W of cooling at an EER of 3.5 is close to 1 000 W on the meter. A machine with a better efficiency rating delivers the same 3 000 kcal/h for less.

How do I recognise a frigorías figure as a familiar BTU size?

Multiply the kcal/h number by about 3.968. That maps 2 250 to roughly 8 930 BTU/h, 3 000 to about 11 900 and 4 500 to about 17 860 — each a hair under the round marketing size. The quick mental version is to multiply by four and knock off a per cent.

Some datasheets write cooling as a negative kcal/h — why?

Because in a heat-balance table every flow needs a sign: heat leaving the space is negative, heat entering it is positive. A reversible heat pump may therefore be listed as −3 000 kcal/h in cooling and +3 400 kcal/h in heating. Enter the size of the number here and read the sign as the direction of the transfer.
