Horsepower to Kilowatts

Turns a US brochure horsepower rating into the kilowatt figure a European registration file expects, with worked examples from familiar US-market engines.

Moving a US Brochure Horsepower Figure onto European Paperwork

A car that crossed the Atlantic arrives with its power written in the wrong unit. The window sticker, the sales brochure and every US review quote horsepower; the registration file, the certificate of conformity and the insurer's form all expect kilowatts. Somewhere between the shipping agent and the licence plate, someone has to produce the kW number — and it has to be the right one, because it is the figure that ends up printed on the vehicle document and read by everyone afterwards.

Conversion factor: 1 hp = 0.7456998716 kW, because mechanical horsepower is defined as 745.69987158227 W. A 480 hp Mustang GT is 357.94 kW, which appears on the papers as 358 kW. Working the other way, divide by 0.7457.

What to Establish Before You Convert

The paperwork is metric by law

EU registration certificates carry maximum net power in kilowatts in a dedicated field, taken from the type-approval documentation. Horsepower appears nowhere official — it survives only in advertising and conversation.

A US figure is SAE net, at the crank

Every modern US rating is measured with the production intake, exhaust and accessories fitted, at the flywheel. It is not a wheel figure and not the inflated gross number used before the early 1970s.

A homologated figure beats a conversion

If the model was ever sold in Europe, or the manufacturer issues a certificate of conformity for it, the kW on that document is the number to use. Your arithmetic is the fallback, not the authority.

Round the way the form does

Registration fields carry whole kilowatts, so 357.94 becomes 358. Keep the unrounded value in your notes in case a clerk needs to see how the figure was reached.

Type the horsepower from the source document

Enter the figure exactly as the brochure or window sticker states it — 200, 285, 480 — into the left field. The kilowatt value appears as you type, and a comma is accepted as the decimal separator.

Note the exact value, then round for the form

285 hp reads as 212.52446 kW. Write 213 kW in the field and keep the long value with your file, so a discrepancy of one kilowatt against a manufacturer letter is easy to explain.

Copy the plain number into the form field

The copy button gives you the bare value with no unit and no spaces, which is what an online registration or insurance form accepts without complaint. Ctrl + C inside a field does the same.

Convert the standing figure, not the option you added: the number on the paperwork describes the engine as approved. A tune, an exhaust or a supercharger kit does not change it, and in most countries a modified vehicle needs the power reassessed by an inspection body rather than recalculated at home.

Note how the metric figures fall short of any round number the marketing department would have chosen. That is the tell of a converted rating: a car homologated in Europe from the start tends to show a tidy 150 or 300 kW, while an imported US model carries the awkward remainder of an arithmetic conversion.

Import Paperwork and Spec-Sheet Questions

Will a registration office accept a kilowatt figure I converted myself?

Usually only as supporting evidence. The power printed on a registration certificate is meant to come from the type-approval file — the maximum net power line of a certificate of conformity, or an equivalent statement from the manufacturer or an approved inspection body. A converted brochure figure is what you use to fill in a draft, sanity-check a document, or explain a discrepancy, and it should agree with the official number to within the rounding.

What does SAE net mean, and could I be looking at an old gross rating?

SAE net is measured with the engine as installed: production air cleaner and exhaust fitted, alternator and water pump driven, ignition and fuelling as delivered. Gross ratings, standard on US brochures until the early 1970s, came from a bare engine on a stand and were flattered by a wide margin. If you are converting a figure for a classic, check which standard it was quoted under before you put a kilowatt number anywhere official.

My dyno sheet reads well below the brochure. Which figure should I convert?

The brochure. A rolling-road result is measured at the wheels and loses the transmission, driveline and tyres along the way — commonly something like a tenth to a fifth of the crank figure, more through an automatic. Documentation always describes engine output, so a 480 hp car reading 400 hp at the wheels is still 358 kW on paper, not 298 kW.

Why does the manufacturer's own kilowatt figure differ from my conversion by a few units?

Two reasons, and they compound. First, rounding: a brochure that prints 285 hp may have converted from an underlying value it also rounded, so a round trip drifts. Second, measurement: the US and European ratings come from different test procedures with different correction factors and accessory rules, so the same engine can be certified at slightly different numbers in each market. A gap of one or two kilowatts is normal; a gap of twenty means you are comparing two different figures.

Where on a US window sticker or title do I find the horsepower?

Often nowhere. A Monroney window sticker is required to list the engine's displacement and configuration along with fuel economy and emissions, but horsepower is optional and many manufacturers leave it off; a title or registration lists displacement or cylinder count, not power. The reliable sources are the model-year brochure, the press kit, or the manufacturer's own archived specifications for that trim and engine combination.
