Frequently Asked Questions

How is the ingredient cost calculated?

The cost for each ingredient is calculated as: (Package Price / Package Quantity) × Quantity Used.

Example: If a 1kg bag of flour costs $2 and you use 500g, the cost is ($2 / 1000g) × 500g = $1.00

What does "Markup" mean?

Markup is the percentage added on top of the cost per serving to determine your selling price. A 30% markup on a $2 cost means the selling price would be $2.60, giving you $0.60 profit per serving.

This helps you cover overhead costs, labor, and generate profit while remaining competitive in the market.

Can I use different units for the same ingredient?

Yes. Select the appropriate unit for each ingredient from the dropdown. Make sure the unit is consistent between the quantity used and the package quantity for accurate cost calculation.

Available units include: grams (g), kilograms (kg), cups, tablespoons (tbsp), teaspoons (tsp), pieces, liters (L), milliliters (mL), and more.

Are my saved recipes secure?

Your recipes are stored locally in your browser. If you have an account, they are also synced to the server for access across devices. No recipe data is shared with third parties.

Privacy First: Your recipe data remains private and is never sold or shared with external parties.

Why does the currency change my number format?

Different currencies use different formatting conventions. For example, USD uses two decimal places ($1,234.56), while VND uses no decimals (1.234 ₫). The calculator automatically adjusts formatting based on the selected currency.

This ensures your cost calculations display correctly according to international standards and local expectations.

Can I calculate costs for large batches?

Absolutely. Set the servings to any number — whether it's 10 portions for a family dinner or 500 for a catering event. The per-serving cost and selling price scale accordingly.

This makes the calculator perfect for both home cooking and commercial food production planning.
