What is Recipe Scaler?
Recipe Scaler helps you adjust ingredient quantities when cooking for more or fewer people. Whether you're doubling a recipe for a party or halving it for a solo meal, this tool recalculates every ingredient instantly.
Instead of doing mental math with fractions and odd measurements, simply enter your original servings and desired servings — the tool handles the rest, displaying results as easy-to-read fractions like ½, ⅓, and ¾.

How to Use Recipe Scaler
Set Servings
Enter the original serving count from your recipe (e.g., 4 servings). Then enter your desired serving count (e.g., 8 servings). The scale factor updates automatically.
For common scaling, use the quick buttons: ½x, 2x, 3x, or 4x.
Add Ingredients
For each ingredient, enter:
- Name — the ingredient name (e.g., "Flour")
- Quantity — amount in numbers, decimals, or fractions (e.g., "2", "0.5", "1/2", "1 1/2")
- Unit — select from 30+ measurement units (cups, tbsp, grams, etc.)
Paste from a Recipe
Click the Paste button and paste your ingredient list directly. The tool automatically parses lines like:
- "2 cups flour"
- "1/2 tsp salt"
- "3 eggs"
- "1½ cups sugar"
View Scaled Results
The Scaled column shows adjusted quantities in friendly fractions. When the scale factor differs from 1x, scaled values are highlighted in green for easy reading.
Save and Reuse
Click Save Recipe to store your ingredient list with a custom name. Saved recipes appear in the collapsible panel below and persist across sessions. Click any saved recipe to reload it instantly.
Features
Smart Fraction Display
Scaled quantities are shown as readable fractions (½, ⅓, ¼, ¾, ⅛) instead of awkward decimals like 0.333. This makes it easy to measure with standard kitchen tools.
Intelligent Rounding
The tool rounds quantities to practical cooking amounts. Small values get more precision (⅛ increments), while larger values round to halves or whole numbers — matching how recipes are actually used in the kitchen.
Flexible Input
Enter quantities as whole numbers (2), decimals (0.5), simple fractions (1/2), or mixed fractions (1 1/2). The tool understands all these formats.
Paste & Auto-Parse
Copy an ingredient list from any recipe website and paste it directly into the tool. It recognizes common formats including bulleted lists, numbered lists, and various unit abbreviations.
- Cups, tbsp, oz, g, kg, ml
- Unicode fractions (½, ¼)
- Bulleted & numbered lists
30+ Measurement Units
Supports volume units, weight units, and count units for complete recipe flexibility.
- Volume: cup, tbsp, tsp, ml, l, fl oz, pint, quart, gallon
- Weight: g, kg, oz, lb
- Count: piece, dozen, pinch, dash, clove, bunch, can, slice

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I paste ingredients from a recipe website?
Yes. Click the Paste button and paste your ingredient list. The tool parses common formats including "2 cups flour", "1/2 tsp salt", bulleted lists, and numbered lists. It also understands unicode fractions like ½ and ¼.
How does fraction display work?
When a scaled quantity matches a common fraction (½, ⅓, ¼, ⅔, ¾, ⅛), it displays the fraction symbol instead of a decimal. For example, 0.5 shows as ½ and 0.333 shows as ⅓. Values that don't match a common fraction are rounded to 2 decimal places.
What units are supported?
Over 30 units are available, including:
- Volume: cups, tablespoons (tbsp), teaspoons (tsp), milliliters (ml), liters (l), fluid ounces, pints, quarts, gallons
- Weight: ounces (oz), pounds (lb), grams (g), kilograms (kg)
- Count: pieces, dozen, pinch, dash, cloves, slices, bunch, can, and more
Where are my saved recipes stored?
Saved recipes are stored in your browser's local storage. They persist across sessions but are specific to the browser and device you're using. Clearing your browser data will remove saved recipes.
Is there a limit to how many recipes I can save?
You can save up to 20 recipes. When the limit is reached, saving a new recipe removes the oldest one automatically.
Is my data private?
Yes. All calculations happen entirely in your browser. No ingredient data or recipes are sent to any server.
