Type Bangla Online with the Probhat Layout
This on-screen Bangla (Bengali) keyboard writes the বাংলা script the way native typists do, using the semi-phonetic Probhat arrangement. Sound a letter out on your physical keyboard — press b for ব, k for ক, m for ম — or click and tap the keys on screen. A live character counter follows your text, and the Copy button sends the whole thing to messages, posts, or documents.
The Bangla Script: Vowels, Consonants, and Signs
Bangla is an abugida: a consonant is not silent on its own but carries a built-in vowel sound (roughly an "o"), and you reshape that sound by attaching a vowel mark. Because of this, the alphabet splits into a few clear groups, and the keyboard is organised around them.
11 Vowel Letters
The independent vowels অ আ ই ঈ উ ঊ ঋ এ ঐ ও ঔ begin a word or stand alone. Each one lives on this layout, mostly on the Shift layer.
Vowel Signs (কার)
When a vowel follows a consonant it becomes a hanging mark, called a কার (kar): া ি ী ু ূ. These sit on the unshifted letter keys.
Consonant Rows
More than thirty consonants, from ক খ গ ঘ ঙ through শ ষ স হ, are grouped so related sounds sit next to each other.
Plain and Aspirated Pairs on One Key
Bangla distinguishes an ordinary consonant from its "breathy" or aspirated partner, and the layout pairs the two on a single key. Tap the key for the plain sound; hold Shift for the aspirated one. So ক (ka) and খ (kha) share a key, as do গ/ঘ (ga/gha), দ/ধ (da/dha), and ব/ভ (ba/bha).
Numerals, Nasal Signs, and the Daŗi
- The number row types Bangla's own digits ০ ১ ২ ৩ ৪ ৫ ৬ ৭ ৮ ৯ — not the Western 0–9.
- The nasal signs anusvara ং and chandra visarga ঃ ride on Shift, at Shift + L and Shift + H.
- A Bangla sentence closes with the vertical bar । (daŗi), which lives on the period key instead of a Latin full stop.
- The nukta ় (Shift + comma) is the small dot used to build letters such as য় and ড়.
How the Probhat Layout Differs from QWERTY
Probhat sits on top of the familiar QWERTY frame, so nothing about the key positions is new — but what each key produces is very different from an English keyboard.
- Letters are chosen by sound, not shape. The Roman key maps to a Bangla letter of a similar sound — k gives ক, j gives জ, d gives দ, m gives ম, s gives স — which is why it feels quick to learn.
- Shift is not for capitals. Bangla has no upper and lower case. Here Shift reaches the aspirated consonant or the independent vowel — for example Shift + G is ঘ and Shift + A is অ.
- Two forms of every vowel. A Latin keyboard has one "a"; Bangla needs the standalone letter আ and the attached mark া for the same vowel, and the layout keeps them on separate keys.
- The number row is Bangla by default. Press the top row and you get ১ ২ ৩; the Western digits and symbols move onto the Shift layer.
Typing Your First Bangla Words
Build a few real words and watch the vowel signs attach as you go.
A consonant with a vowel sign
Type k then i. You get ক followed by the i-kar, which snaps on to make কি ("what"). The vowel mark never stands alone — it always joins the letter before it.
Start a word with a standalone vowel
Press v for আ, then m and i. That spells আমি ("I"). Because the word opens on a vowel, you use the independent letter, not a kar.
Reach an aspirated consonant with Shift
Hold Shift + g for ঘ, then r for র. You have written ঘর ("home"). The plain গ would need only g on its own.
Add a nasal sign, then copy
Spell বাংলা with b, a, Shift + l (for the anusvara ং), l, a. When the text looks right, hit Copy; use Clear to wipe the box and begin again.
Tips for Faster, Cleaner Bangla Typing
- Think in sound pairs. Once you know that Shift turns any consonant into its aspirated twin, half the alphabet is already learned — kh, gh, chh, jh, th, dh, ph, bh all come from one habit.
- Decide vowel-letter or vowel-sign first. If the vowel opens a syllable, reach for the standalone letter (Shift layer); if it follows a consonant, the unshifted kar is what you want. This single choice prevents most spelling slips.
- Close sentences with the daŗi । on the period key rather than a dot — it is what makes typed Bangla look properly finished.
- Need Western digits? Hold Shift on the number row to fall back to 0–9 and the usual symbols, then release for Bangla numerals. Click the on-screen keys for rarer signs like ঞ or the nukta.
Bangla Keyboard Questions Answered
Why does the number row give me ০ ১ ২ instead of 0, 1, 2?
Bangla has its own set of numeral glyphs, so the unshifted number row types them by default. When you need Western digits or the symbols above them, hold Shift while pressing the same keys.
How do I type an aspirated letter such as ধ, ঘ, or ভ?
Hold Shift and press the plain consonant that shares the key. Shift + the দ key gives ধ, Shift + the গ key gives ঘ, and Shift + the ব key gives ভ.
What is the difference between আ and া?
They are the same vowel in two roles. The standalone letter আ is used when the vowel begins a word or syllable; the mark া (a kar) is used when the vowel attaches to a consonant, like the া in বাংলা. Pick the standalone form from the Shift layer and the kar from the unshifted keys.
Where is the ং that appears in বাংলা?
That nasal sign is the anusvara, and it sits on Shift + L. Its companion, the visarga ঃ, is on Shift + H. Type the consonant and vowel first, then add the sign after them.
Which mark ends a Bangla sentence?
Bangla uses the daŗi ।, a single upright stroke, in place of a full stop. You will find it on the period key, so it comes naturally at the end of a line without hunting through a symbol menu.
Is this really the Probhat layout, and can I use my physical keyboard?
Yes. The keys follow the semi-phonetic Probhat mapping, where Roman keys point to Bangla letters of a similar sound. You can type entirely on your physical keyboard, click the on-screen keys, or freely mix the two — Shift behaves the same whichever way you work.
