Type Telugu Online with the InScript Layout
This on-screen Telugu keyboard lets you write తెలుగు using the InScript arrangement — the standard Indic layout built into Windows, Android, and Linux. Every vowel, consonant, vowel sign, and Telugu numeral sits on a fixed key, so you build syllables the way the script actually works: a consonant already carries an inherent a, and you reshape it with the marks around it. Click the keys, tap them on a phone, or type on your physical keyboard.
The Telugu Script: Vowels, Consonants, and Signs
Telugu is an abugida, so the basic unit is a syllable rather than a bare letter. Each consonant contains the vowel a on its own — క reads as ka, not just k. To change or silence that vowel you add a mark. The four groups below explain what every key on the layout belongs to.

Vowel signs (matras)
Consonants
Marks and numerals
When two consonants meet with no vowel between them, Telugu ties them into a single stacked cluster called an ఒత్తు (vottu), where the second consonant is drawn in a smaller form beneath the first. The keyboard builds these with the virama ్: type a consonant, then the virama, then the next consonant, and the renderer joins them for you.
How InScript Differs from a Plain English Keyboard
On a Latin keyboard, Shift only gives you capitals. InScript puts real linguistic pairs on the base and Shift levels, so familiar keys behave very differently here.
Base = sign, Shift = full vowel
The e key types the vowel sign ా; Shift+e gives the standalone vowel ఆ. The same split runs through ి / ఇ, ు / ఉ, and the rest.
Base = plain, Shift = aspirated
Each consonant pairs with its aspirated twin. k types క (ka) and Shift+k types ఖ (kha); i gives గ (ga), Shift+i gives ఘ (gha).
Telugu numerals on the number row
The digit keys produce native figures ౧ ౨ ౩ by default; the ASCII symbols ! @ # shift up to the Shift level.
One scheme, many scripts
InScript maps the same keys across India's scripts, so muscle memory from Hindi or Kannada InScript carries over to Telugu.
Building a Telugu Word Step by Step
Start with a consonant
Press k (or click క). Because every consonant carries an inherent a, you already have క — ka.
Add a vowel sign
Press f for the sign ి to make కి (ki), or r for ీ to make కీ (kii). The sign fuses onto the consonant instead of standing alone.
Join consonants with the virama
To write అమ్మ (amma, mother): press Shift+d for అ, then b for మ, then d for the virama ్, then b again. The two మ collapse into the stacked మ్మ.
Copy and reuse
Watch the character counter track your length, then press Copy to send the line to your clipboard and paste it anywhere.
Tips for Accurate Telugu Typing
- Consonant first, sign second. Type the consonant, then its vowel sign. Reach for a Shift-level independent vowel like అ or ఇ only when the vowel opens a word or stands alone.
- Watch retroflex versus dental. Telugu contrasts the hard ట డ ణ with the soft త ద న; they sit on different keys, so picking the wrong one changes the word entirely.
- Use the sunna for nasals. The anusvara ం (key z) covers most nasal sounds before another consonant, as in అంత; the candrabindu ఁ on Shift+z is far rarer.
- Stack clusters on purpose. For a conjunct such as క్క, insert the virama ్ between the two consonants; leave it out and you get two loose syllables instead.
- Vocalic vowels have a dedicated key. The sign ృ just past the number row spells names like కృష్ణ without any workaround.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the number row type ౧ ౨ ౩ instead of 1, 2, 3?
InScript keeps the base of the number row for native Telugu numerals, so a digit key inserts the Telugu figure and Shift reaches the ASCII symbols. If you need Western 1–9, type those from your device's normal keyboard.
How do I write a double letter or conjunct like the మ్మ in అమ్మ?
Type the first consonant, press the virama ్ (the d key), then type the second consonant. Telugu automatically renders the pair as a stacked vottu, and that virama drives every consonant cluster.
Why does a vowel key give me a floating mark instead of a whole letter?
The base of each vowel key is a vowel sign (matra) meant to attach to a preceding consonant, so on its own it looks like a stray stroke. Press Shift on the same key for the full independent vowel — Shift+e is ఆ, Shift+f is ఇ.
Where are the aspirated consonants like ఖ, ఘ, and ధ?
Each aspirate shares a key with its plain partner on the Shift level. Shift+k gives ఖ, Shift+i gives ఘ, and Shift+o gives ధ. Learning the plain/aspirated pairs roughly halves the positions you need to memorize.
Is this the same InScript layout as Windows or my Android phone?
Yes. The key positions follow the standard InScript scheme used by system Telugu keyboards, so practising here builds the exact muscle memory you will use on a desktop or phone.
Can I type English letters and have them turn into Telugu?
No — this is a direct InScript key layout, not a phonetic transliteration tool. Each key inserts one specific Telugu character, giving you exact control over spelling, matras, and conjuncts.
