Convert Chinese characters to Pinyin with tone marks or tone numbers. See character-by-character alignment with color-coded tones, and copy the result.

Chinese to Pinyin Converter

This Chinese to Pinyin converter turns Hanzi (汉字) into Pinyin romanization so you can read and pronounce Mandarin with the Latin alphabet. Paste or type Chinese text and the Pinyin appears instantly, with tone marks or tone numbers. It is built for students learning Chinese, travelers, and anyone working with Chinese text.

You can switch the output between Tone Marks (māmā) and Tone Numbers (ma1ma1) with one click, and a character-by-character alignment shows each Hanzi paired with its reading. Each of the five Mandarin tones is color-coded so you can spot tone patterns at a glance.

Private by design: every conversion runs in your browser using a built-in dictionary. Your text is never uploaded, stored, or sent to any server.

What Is Pinyin?

Pinyin (拼音) literally means "spell sounds." It is the official romanization system for Standard Mandarin, used worldwide to teach Chinese pronunciation. Each character maps to a syllable with one of four tones plus a neutral tone, and the tone changes the meaning of the word.

Tone 1 — Flat

High and level pitch: mā (妈 = mother).

Tone 2 — Rising

Rises from mid to high: má (麻 = hemp).

Tone 3 — Dipping

Falls then rises: mǎ (马 = horse).

Tone 4 — Falling

Sharp drop from high to low: mà (骂 = scold).

Tone 5 — Neutral

Light and short, no fixed pitch: ma (吗 = question particle).

Two Notations

Tone marks (nǐhǎo) rule textbooks; tone numbers (ni3hao3) suit typing and apps.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert Chinese characters to Pinyin?

Type or paste your Chinese text into the input panel. The Pinyin appears instantly on the right, and an alignment below pairs each character with its reading. There is nothing to install or sign up for.

What is the difference between tone marks and tone numbers?

Tone marks are diacritics placed over vowels (ā, á, ǎ, à), the standard in textbooks and dictionaries. Tone numbers are digits added after each syllable (a1, a2, a3, a4), common in digital text and input methods. Both carry the same tonal information — use the Tone Marks or Tone Numbers toggle to switch.

Why does a character show a different pronunciation than I expected?

Many Chinese characters are polyphonic — they have more than one valid reading depending on context. This converter uses the most common reading for each character. For example, 行 defaults to xíng rather than háng. Without sentence-level analysis, character-level conversion always picks the most frequent pronunciation.

How many characters does the converter support?

The built-in dictionary covers over 2,600 commonly used Chinese characters, which spans the vast majority of characters in everyday Chinese text. Characters not in the dictionary are shown as-is without conversion.

Does it support Traditional and Simplified Chinese?

The converter primarily supports Simplified Chinese characters. Some Traditional characters may be recognized when they share the same Unicode code point, but full Traditional Chinese coverage is not guaranteed.

What do the colors in the alignment mean?

Each color marks one of the five Mandarin tones: Tone 1 is flat and high, Tone 2 rises, Tone 3 dips then rises, Tone 4 falls sharply, and Tone 5 is neutral and light. The color coding helps you recognize tone patterns at a glance.

Can I copy or export the Pinyin?

Yes. Click the Copy button in the output header to copy the Pinyin text to your clipboard, then paste it into documents, messages, or study notes.

Is my text stored or sent to a server?

No. All conversion happens in your browser using a built-in dictionary. Your text is never uploaded, stored, or sent anywhere, so you can use the tool with any content.
