Cycles per Second to Hertz

Decode 'cycles', 'cy', 'c/s', kc and Mc markings on vintage nameplates, dial glass and service manuals into the hertz values a modern meter shows.

Reading "Cycles" on Old Nameplates and Service Manuals

You are standing in front of a lathe, a transformer, a tube amplifier or a shop compressor, and the riveted plate says 115 V  60 CYCLES  1 PH. The manual that came with it mentions a 455 kc intermediate-frequency stage and a 10.7 Mc alignment point. None of that vocabulary appears on a modern meter, a modern breaker panel or a modern signal generator, so the first job in any restoration is translating the plate into today's words.

Happily this is the gentlest conversion in the entire unit system: a cycle per second and a hertz are the same quantity under two names. Nothing was rescaled, no correction factor crept in, and no vintage rating became wrong overnight. What changed was the label, along with a family of prefixed abbreviations a technician trained after 1970 was never taught.

Conversion factor: 1 cps = 1 Hz exactly — the digits stamped on the plate never move. A motor marked 60 cycles is a 60 Hz motor. A receiver aligned at 455 kc is aligned at 455 kHz, which comes out as 455 000 Hz.

How the vocabulary shifted

The year the name changed

The name entered official international vocabulary when the 11th General Conference on Weights and Measures adopted it in 1960, three decades after it was first proposed. Factories kept stamping "cycles" long afterwards, so the wording on a plate dates a machine only loosely.

What the tilde stamp means

A squiggle beside a number — 50~, 60~, occasionally doubled — is the classical symbol for alternating current, and the figure in front of it is the supply frequency. A straight or dashed bar in that same position meant direct current, which is why a tag reading simply "110 V" with a bar warns you the machine was never intended for a wall socket.

Kilocycles and megacycles

Radio-era paperwork abbreviated kilocycles per second as kc or kc/s, and megacycles per second as Mc or Mc/s. Drop the "c", write "Hz", and the prefix survives untouched. Dial glass printed 540–1600 kc covers precisely the band that a modern receiver prints as 540–1600 kHz.

Type the figure exactly as the casting stamps it

Enter the bare number from the etched tag on the left — 25, 50, 60 or 400 — and the hertz value appears beside it while you type. Where a European hand wrote the rating as 16,7, the comma is read as a decimal point rather than a thousands mark, so an odd traction figure survives the trip intact.

Switch the target side for kc and Mc markings

Alignment points in a tube-era manual are quoted in kilocycles or megacycles rather than bare cycles. Open the searchable list on the right, choose kHz or MHz, and a figure such as 10.7 lifted from an FM intermediate-frequency stage lands on the dial marking your bench generator expects.

Copy the bare figure for a parts order

These are the notations that genuinely turn up on castings, dial glass, schematic footnotes and wartime maintenance sheets. Each one converts by leaving the digits alone and swapping the word.

Questions From the Restoration Bench

When did "cycles per second" officially become the hertz?

The International Electrotechnical Commission put the name forward in 1930, and it entered the international system of units at the 11th General Conference on Weights and Measures in 1960. Uptake on the shop floor lagged badly, because nameplate tooling was expensive to re-cut, and English-language consumer literature only settled on the new spelling through the late 1960s. Equipment built well into that decade can therefore carry either wording quite legitimately.

What do kc, Mc and kc/s mean on a vintage schematic?

They are prefixed forms of the old name: kilocycles per second and megacycles per second, with the trailing "per second" so universally assumed that draughtsmen stopped writing it. Translation is mechanical — kc becomes kHz, Mc becomes MHz, digits untouched. A note reading "align IF to 455 kc" and one reading "align IF to 455 kHz" call for the identical adjustment. You will occasionally meet kcs or a raised "s" on the same drawing; treat every variant as the same unit.

My machine tag reads "220 V 50~" — how should I read that?

The tilde marks alternating current, so the tag describes 220 volts of AC at 50 hertz. Companion symbols on the same plate are worth decoding while you are there: 1 PH or a single tilde for single phase, 3~ or 3 PH for three phase, and a bar symbol for direct current. A dual marking such as "50/60~" means the maker certified the machine for either supply, which settles a common argument before it starts.

Is gear rated in cycles safe on a modern supply of the same number?

The renaming introduced no incompatibility at all: a supply delivering 60 Hz today repeats at exactly the rate the plate called 60 cycles. What changed over the decades is the equipment rather than the grid — paper and electrolytic capacitors dry out, rubber-insulated leads go brittle, and windings absorb moisture. Judge a restoration on insulation resistance, capacitor condition and earthing, and treat the frequency marking itself as settled.

Why do some manuals write c/s while others write cps?

House style, largely along national lines. British and Commonwealth writing preferred the solidus form c/s; American practice compressed the same idea to cps, shortened again to cy where a casting offered little room. No variant implies a different quantity, so a document mixing forms is merely inconsistent rather than contradictory.
