What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening measure that uses your weight and height to estimate body fat. It is widely used by healthcare professionals to categorize individuals into weight groups: underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese.

BMI Formula: BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)² — While it does not directly measure body fat, it provides a quick and useful indicator of whether your weight falls within a healthy range for your height.

Dual Unit Support

Calculate using metric (kg/cm) or imperial (lbs/ft/in) measurements for your convenience.

Additional Metrics

Get BMI Prime and Ponderal Index alongside your standard BMI calculation.

WHO Standards

Includes both standard WHO and Asian BMI classifications from WHO Asia-Pacific guidelines.

How to Use the BMI Calculator

1

Choose Your Unit System

Select the Metric tab (kg/cm) or Imperial tab (lbs/ft) at the top of the calculator.

2

Enter Your Weight

Type your weight in the weight field. For metric, enter kilograms. For imperial, enter pounds.

3

Enter Your Height

Type your height. For metric, enter centimeters. For imperial, enter feet and inches separately. You can also use the quick height preset buttons for common values.

4

View Your Results

Your BMI is calculated instantly as you type. The result includes your BMI value, health category, a color-coded gauge, healthy weight range, BMI Prime, and Ponderal Index.

Understanding Your Results

BMI Value

The calculated number based on your weight and height.

Category Badge

Your classification (Underweight, Normal, Overweight, or Obese) with a matching color.

Gauge Bar

A visual indicator showing where your BMI falls on the spectrum.

Healthy Weight Range

The weight range that corresponds to a normal BMI (18.5–24.9) for your height.

BMI Prime

Your BMI divided by 25. A value under 1.0 means you are in the normal range.

Ponderal Index

An alternative metric calculated as weight divided by height cubed, which may be more accurate for very tall or short individuals.

Key Features

Dual Unit Support

Switch seamlessly between Metric (kg and cm) and Imperial (lbs, feet, and inches) with a single click. Each mode provides appropriate quick height presets for convenience.

Real-Time Calculation

Results update instantly as you type — no need to click a calculate button. Adjust your weight or height and see the changes immediately.

Visual BMI Gauge

A color-coded gradient bar shows exactly where your BMI falls. The smooth animated marker moves from blue (underweight) through green (normal) to red (obese), making it easy to visualize your position at a glance.

WHO and Asian BMI Standards

The calculator uses standard WHO classifications by default. When your BMI falls in a range where the Asian BMI standard (WHO Asia-Pacific) gives a different classification, a note automatically appears with the alternative category.

Important for Asian populations: Research shows that Asian populations may face higher health risks at lower BMI thresholds, which is why the WHO Asia-Pacific guidelines use adjusted cutoff points.

Additional Health Metrics

Beyond the basic BMI number, the calculator provides:

  • Healthy Weight Range — Know exactly how much you should weigh for your height
  • BMI Prime — A ratio that indicates how far you are from the upper limit of normal BMI
  • Ponderal Index — An alternative to BMI that accounts better for height differences

Personalized Suggestions

Based on your results, the calculator provides a personalized message telling you whether you are in the normal range or how much weight you would need to gain or lose to reach it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a healthy BMI range?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal weight. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is classified as obese.

Normal Weight Range 18.5 - 24.9

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations. It does not distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI without being overweight. It also may not be fully accurate for children, pregnant women, or the elderly.

Professional advice: Always consult a healthcare professional for a complete health assessment. BMI should be used as one indicator among many, not as a definitive measure of health.

Why are Asian BMI standards different?

Research has shown that people of Asian descent tend to have higher body fat percentages at the same BMI compared to other populations. The WHO Asia-Pacific guidelines use lower cutoff points to better reflect health risks in these populations.

Standard WHO

BMI Cutoffs

  • Overweight: 25+
  • Obese: 30+
WHO Asia-Pacific

BMI Cutoffs

  • Overweight: 23+
  • Obese: 25+

What is BMI Prime?

BMI Prime is the ratio of your BMI to the upper limit of normal BMI (25). A BMI Prime of less than 1.0 means you are within the normal weight range.

Example: A BMI Prime of 0.90 means your BMI is 90% of the upper normal limit, indicating you are comfortably within the healthy range.

What is Ponderal Index?

The Ponderal Index (also known as Rohrer's Index) is calculated as weight divided by height cubed (kg/m³). Unlike BMI, it may provide more consistent results across different heights, making it a useful complement to BMI.

Advantage: The Ponderal Index is particularly useful for very tall or very short individuals, as it accounts for height differences more accurately than standard BMI.
