What is the Calorie Burn Calculator?
The Calorie Burn Calculator helps you estimate how many calories you burn during any physical activity or exercise. It uses MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) values from the 2024 Compendium of Physical Activities — the most comprehensive and scientifically validated database of energy expenditure for physical activities.
How It Works
The calculator uses a simple but effective formula:
MET represents the energy cost of an activity relative to rest. A MET value of 1 equals the energy you burn sitting still. Running at 6 mph has a MET of 9.8, meaning it burns nearly 10 times more energy than resting.
What is MET?
MET stands for Metabolic Equivalent of Task. It measures the intensity of physical activities:
Light Intensity
- Walking slowly
- Stretching
- Yoga
Moderate Intensity
- Brisk walking
- Cycling
- Dancing
Vigorous Intensity
- Running
- Swimming
- HIIT
- Martial arts

Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the calorie burn estimate?
The estimates are based on MET values from the 2024 Compendium of Physical Activities and are generally accurate within ±15–20%. Actual calorie burn varies based on factors like fitness level, body composition, age, and environmental conditions.
What is MET and where do the values come from?
MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) is a standardized measure of energy expenditure. A MET of 1 represents resting metabolism. The values used in this calculator come from the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities, which catalogs over 1,100 activities with measured or estimated energy costs.
The Compendium of Physical Activities is the gold standard reference for energy expenditure research, used by health professionals and researchers worldwide.

Why does the same activity burn different calories for different people?
Calorie burn is directly proportional to body weight. A heavier person expends more energy performing the same activity at the same intensity because more energy is needed to move a larger body mass.
Running 30 min
- MET: 9.8
- Calories: ~294
Running 30 min

- Calories: ~392
Can I track multiple activities in one session?
Yes. Use the Add to Session button after each calculation to build a multi-activity workout log. The session section shows each activity with its duration, MET value, and calories, along with a running total.
- Add unlimited activities
- View individual and total calories
- Remove or clear activities anytime
- Perfect for circuit training or mixed workouts
Is my data stored or shared?
No. All calculations happen entirely in your browser. Only your weight and unit preference are saved to your browser's local storage for convenience. No data is sent to any server.
Why don't I see my specific activity in the list?
The calculator includes 100+ of the most common activities. If your exact activity isn't listed, choose the closest match based on similar intensity and movement patterns. You can also use the search function to find related activities.
