Nobody resents forty-five minutes on a train. It is a podcast, a chapter, a scroll through a feed, and then it ends. So the useful question is never how long something takes, but how much of a year it owns. That is a multiplication followed by a division, and the division is where people go astray, because a day of elapsed time is not the same size as a day of anything you would rather have been doing.

What the last column really argues for is attention to the top of the table rather than the bottom. It counts whole calendar days rather than waking hours, so it is not 575 lost weekends. And travelling is not automatically wasted — people read, sleep and decompress on trains. Treat it as a fair basis for comparing two job offers, not as a verdict on the time itself.

Should I annualise on 230 working days or on all 365?

Match the multiplier to the habit. Commuting and stand-ups only happen on days you work, and 230 is the defensible count: roughly 261 weekdays in a year, less about 25 days of leave and 8 public holidays, which conveniently equals 46 five-day weeks. Something genuinely daily, like a morning walk, deserves the full 365. Half an hour shows the gap plainly — 4.79 d on the working-year basis against 7.61 d if you never skip a morning. Both figures are right. Reaching for the bigger one to describe an office routine is where this kind of comparison forfeits its credibility.

What does a daily stand-up cost a team of eight over a year?

Convert it in person-minutes. A quarter of an hour with eight people spends 120 person-minutes a day, which over 230 working days is 27 600 — 19.17 person-days a year. The true cost runs higher, because each attendee also loses a few minutes getting back into whatever they put down. None of this is an argument against the meeting; it is an argument for knowing the price before defending it. A stand-up that unblocks two people a week easily justifies 19 person-days.
