Days to Hours

Turns a carrier's transit quote in days into the hour figure a delivery promise, an SLA clause and an escalation timer are all written in.

A Transit Quote in Days, a Promise Measured in Hours

A carrier rate sheet gives you a number of days. Everything downstream of it runs on hours: the delivery window you pass to a customer, the escalation timer in the order system, the penalty clause in a service agreement. Somewhere in between, a despatch clerk has to decide whether a pallet leaving the dock at 16:00 can realistically be on a receiving bay by Thursday morning, and that is arithmetic rather than judgement.

The multiplication is trivial. The trap is what the day count already includes. Most road and air products publish transit in service days, so the hours you arrive at are hours of carrier operation, not hours on a wall clock, and the two only agree on a consignment that keeps moving through a weekend.

Conversion factor: 1 d = 24 h, so multiply days by 24. A two-day express product is 48 h of transit, a five-day ground move across a country is 120 h, and a 21-day port-to-port ocean leg is 504 h before customs clearance or drayage is added at either end.

What a Carrier Is Really Selling When It Says "Days"

The count starts at the first scan

Transit is measured from the collection scan or the tender to linehaul, never from the moment an order was placed. Picking, packing and waiting for the van are your hours, and they sit outside the quoted figure entirely.

A cut-off decides which day is day zero

Miss the last trailer of the evening and a two-day product still takes two days, it simply starts tomorrow. The transit length never changes; the origin of the clock moves forward by roughly a full 24 h block.

Service days usually skip the weekend

For most business-to-business road products, Saturday and Sunday are not counted at all. Two service days booked on a Friday afternoon can land on a Tuesday, which is 96 h of elapsed time behind a 48 h promise.

The last leg carries its own window

Arriving at the destination depot is not delivery. Booking-in slots, tail-lift requirements and site opening times can hold a consignment another 12 h to 24 h without the carrier ever breaching its published transit.

Working a Quoted Transit Up Into a Deadline

The useful output is not the raw multiplication but a defensible hour figure you can set beside a customer promise and a booked collection time.

Put the carrier's own figure in the left box

Whatever the rate sheet prints, 1, 2, 3 or 0.5 for a same-day product, goes in as written. The hour equivalent appears as you type, and a value entered with a comma as the decimal mark is read exactly like one with a full stop.

Add back the hours the quote excludes

Take the converted number and stack on the pieces the carrier does not price: warehouse pick time, the wait until the next collection, the booking-in slot at the far end. That total, not the transit alone, is what a customer experiences.

Turn it around when the deadline comes first

Often you start from the other end: a receiving site accepts goods for another 36 h. The swap control (↔) flips the pair to h → d, so that ceiling reads as 1.5 d and tells you which service levels can still be quoted.

Lift the plain digits into the consignment record

The copy control returns the number on its own, with no unit and no spacing inside thousands, which is what an SLA field in a transport management system or a spreadsheet column expects. Selecting inside the box and pressing Ctrl + C behaves the same way.

Converted hours are elapsed hours: multiplying by 24 assumes the freight keeps moving overnight and at weekends. If the product is quoted in business days, convert first and then walk the calendar separately, because the two answers diverge by a full 48 h across any weekend.

Read down the hours column and the lesson is about ratios rather than totals. Stepping from overnight to two-day doubles the clock, and each extra day after that adds another fixed 24 h block. That is why one missed cut-off is ruinous on a fast product and almost invisible on an ocean move where 504 h is already in play.

Fractions survive to eight decimals, so 0.5 d, 0.25 d and other same-day variants convert without being rounded up into a whole day.

Questions About Transit Promises

A carrier quotes three business days, so how many hours is that on a calendar?

It depends entirely on the weekday of collection. Three service days is 72 h of counted transit, and if the goods are collected on a Monday they are due Thursday, which happens to be 72 h of calendar time too. Collect on a Wednesday and the third service day is Monday, so the customer waits 120 h. Put a public holiday on that Monday and the same three service days finish on Tuesday, 144 h after collection. Convert to hours to size the carrier's obligation, then step through the calendar separately to find the date. Publishing the hour figure alone is how a service that met its promise still generates a complaint.

When does the transit clock actually start ticking on a consignment?

At the moment the carrier takes custody and records it, which in practice means the collection scan or, for trade counters, the drop-off scan. Time spent picking the order, printing labels, waiting for a driver and loading the trailer belongs to you and not to the transit product. On a two-day service that internal window is easy to underestimate: four hours of warehouse handling turns a 48 h promise into 52 h as far as the buyer is concerned. Measure the gap once across a normal week and carry it as a fixed allowance instead of relitigating it per order.

How much does missing the evening cut-off really cost?

One whole day of the product: 24 h on a weekday, and 72 h when the miss happens on a Friday. The transit itself is unchanged, since an overnight service still takes its 24 h, but day zero has moved to the next operating day. This is why protecting the cut-off is usually worth more than buying a faster product. Upgrading from a two-day to a next-day service saves 24 h, and so does getting the trailer loaded forty minutes earlier, except that the second option costs nothing in freight.

Do Saturdays and Sundays pause the count on every service?

No, and the difference is worth reading in the tariff rather than assuming. Business-to-business road and pallet networks generally count Monday to Friday only, so a weekend is dead time that consumes none of the quota. Consumer parcel networks in many markets now run six or seven days, and ocean and airfreight legs move continuously because a vessel or an aircraft does not stop for the weekend. Where the count pauses, elapsed hours exceed converted hours; where it does not, the two agree and a straight multiplication by 24 gives a date you can commit to.

How do I check how many hours are left before a promised delivery?

Convert the full promise into hours, then subtract the hours already elapsed since the collection scan. A four-day international product is 96 h; if the scan was 30 h ago, 66 h of the allowance survive. Weigh that against what is still to happen, the flight, the customs step, the final leg, and you know whether to escalate now or wait. The reverse direction is just as useful when the deadline comes first: enter the hours remaining, read the answer back in days, and it is immediately obvious which service levels can still make the date.
