Centuries to Years

Works out how many years a run of centuries covers, and which numbered century any given date falls in — including the years ending in 00 that catch people out.

Naming the Hundred Years a Date Falls In

A pamphlet is dated 1789. The library catalogue files it as eighteenth-century. The exhibition label beside it says "the 1700s". Somebody reading both concludes that one of them is wrong, because 1789 visibly begins with a 17 while the ordinal insists on 18. Neither is wrong. The two labels describe overlapping hundred-year blocks and count them from opposite ends of the same convention.

Once you know which system a text is using, the sums are trivial: a century is a hundred years and nothing else. The difficulty is that the ordinal name, the digit-block name and the actual run of numbered years all sit one step out of line with each other, and every argument about when a century begins traces back to a single year that was never written down.

Conversion factor: 1 c = 100 yr, so multiply by a hundred — a nine-century dynasty covers 900 yr. Going the other way for a single date CE, divide the year by 100 and round up: 1789 ÷ 100 = 17.89, which rounds up to the 18th century.

Four Habits Behind the Off-by-One

The count started at one, not zero

The era was numbered from 1 CE, and the year immediately before it is 1 BCE. The first hundred-year block therefore ran from 1 to 100, and every block since has inherited that starting offset.

Two naming systems, nearly one span

"The 1700s" groups years by their leading digits and covers 1700–1799. "The eighteenth century" counts blocks from year 1 and covers 1701–1800. They agree about 99 years and disagree at both ends.

Round years close the block before

1900 is the last year of the nineteenth century and 2000 the last of the twentieth. A year ending in two zeros always finishes its century rather than opening the next one.

Historians rarely use round hundreds

Periodisation follows events, not arithmetic. The "long nineteenth century" is usually bounded by 1789 and 1914, which is 125 yr, or 1.25 c — longer than the century it borrows its name from.

Turning a Run of Centuries Into a Year Count

Reading around a period usually means holding two things at once: how many centuries the span covers, and which numbered years those centuries contain. The tool below settles the first; the rounding rule above settles the second.

Whole numbers and fractions both work: 3 returns 300 yr, and 2.5 returns 250 yr for a period described as two and a half centuries. Spaces inside the figure are ignored, so a pasted "1 2" is read as 12.

Anchor the result to a starting year

A count of years is not yet a date. Add the 300 yr from three centuries to a fixed point — 1517, say — and 1817 falls out, which is the arithmetic hiding inside a phrase like "three centuries after the Reformation began".

Reverse it to name a gap you already have

Pressing swap (↔) puts years on the left, so a 480-year interval between two documents comes back as 4.8 c — the form a catalogue note or a caption would actually use.

Lift the plain number into a timeline

The copy control returns digits with no unit attached and no space between thousands, which is the format a chronology spreadsheet or a database field will accept without complaining. Ctrl + C over a selection does the same.

Named endpoints add a century: from the third century through the fifth is not two centuries but three — the years 201 to 500, a full 300 yr. Whenever both ends are named as ordinals, take (last − first + 1) before converting.

Which Years Each Numbered Century Contains

Each row gives the ordinal name, the exact years it covers, a familiar date sitting inside that span to anchor it, and the mistake most often made about it. The pattern repeats identically in every century, which is what makes it worth learning once.

Read down the final column and the same slip appears in two costumes: a year ending in 00 gets promoted into the century after the one that owns it, and an ordinal gets matched to the digits it resembles. Both trace back to the missing year at the head of the count, and both vanish the moment the span is written out in full instead of named.

What Helps When Dating a Source

Answers arrive with the keystrokes

No button waits to be pressed, so a half-remembered span can be tried at two, two and a half and three centuries in the time it takes to say them out loud.

The pair reads in either order

Swapping converts a raw interval into centuries instead, which is what a caption wants when the catalogue entry only gives two dates and leaves the gap unstated.

Part-centuries survive intact

Up to eight decimal places are kept, so 0.375 c reads back as 37.5 yr rather than collapsing to a rounded half or whole century.

Copied values stay numeric

The unit and the thousands spacing are dropped on copy, so 2 100 lands in a cell as 2100 and can be sorted or subtracted straight away.

Questions About Century Numbering

Which century does the year 1900 belong to?

The nineteenth. Blocks of a hundred are counted from year 1, so the nineteenth century runs 1801 to 1900 inclusive and 1900 is its closing year; the twentieth opens on 1 January 1901. The confusion is fair enough, because "the 1900s" — the digit-block label — genuinely does begin in 1900 and end in 1999. Both labels are in ordinary use and neither is incorrect; they simply name overlapping rather than identical hundred-year spans. When it matters, write the years out. "1801–1900" cannot be misread the way "nineteenth century" can.

Why is the eighteenth century called the 1700s?

Because the ordinal counts completed blocks while the digits show the block in progress. Any year from 1701 to 1800 sits in the eighteenth hundred-year block, since counting began at year 1, and for 99 of those years the leading digits happen to read 17. The exception is 1800 itself, still eighteenth-century but written with an 18. So the ordinal always sits one above the leading digits, except in the final twelve months of each century, when the two briefly agree and then part company again for another hundred years.

Did the twenty-first century begin in 2000 or 2001?

2001 on the strict count: the twentieth century covered 1901 to 2000, so the next block opened on 1 January 2001. Nearly every public celebration happened a year earlier, because what people were marking was the visible roll from 1999 to 2000, and three digits turning over makes a far better spectacle than an ordinal boundary. Both readings survived. National timekeeping bodies stated the 2001 start; calendars, broadcasters and most memories went with 2000. If a document dates something to "the turn of the century", check which of the two it means before you build a range on it.

How are centuries counted before the common era?

Backwards, and with the same gap at the join. The first century BCE covers 100 BCE to 1 BCE; the fifth century BCE covers 500 to 401 BCE, which is why the Parthenon, built between roughly 447 and 432 BCE, counts as a fifth-century building despite digits that read four. The year following 1 BCE is 1 CE, with nothing in between. Astronomers dodge this with a separate numbering that does include a zero, writing 1 BCE as 0 and 2 BCE as −1 — convenient for calculation, but never what a history book means by a century.

Do decades follow the same rule as centuries?

In principle yes, in practice no. A strict ordinal decade also counts from year 1, which would make the 197th decade run 1961 to 1970. Nobody uses it. "The 1960s" is universally taken as 1960 to 1969, grouped by digits, and the cultural weight attached to the label makes that the real boundary. Centuries kept their ordinal names because they live in formal settings — catalogues, art history, legal citation — where the convention was fixed early and stuck. Decades were named informally and the informal system won outright, which is why the two units now disagree with each other.

A hundred-year block counted from year 1, which is why the eighteenth century ends in 1800 rather than 1799. As a duration it is exactly 100 yr; as a label it is an ordinal, and mixing up the two is where the off-by-one comes from.

In a date it is a whole-numbered label with nothing between 1 BCE and 1 CE. As a duration the converter uses the Gregorian mean of 365.2425 d, the average that keeps 400 calendar years and 146 097 days in step.
