Ancient Spans Get Their Shape Back on a Century Grid
"The third millennium BCE" is a genuine answer to a question about when something happened, and it is also close to useless. It stretches from 3000 down to 2001 BCE. The founding of the Egyptian Old Kingdom, the mature phase of the Indus cities and the collapse of the Akkadian empire all sit inside that one label, separated from one another by more time than divides us from the Norman conquest. Cut the same block into ten centuries and those events stop looking like contemporaries.
This is why ancient chronology keeps two scales in play at once. Millennia label the era; centuries carry the argument. Moving a span from one to the other is a multiplication by ten, and it usually reveals that a period summarised in a single phrase was far longer than the phrase implied.

Breaking a Millennium-Scale Period Into Centuries
Published spans for the ancient world tend to arrive in round millennia. Getting them onto a century grid is what makes two of them comparable, and it takes a single entry.
Enter the span exactly as the source states it
Type 3 for three millennia, 0.554 for the Shang dynasty, 2.1 for the Aegean Bronze Age. A comma works in place of a point for the decimal, and the century figure appears without anything being submitted.
Lay two periods next to each other
Convert each span in turn and compare the century counts. A 55 c Neolithic set against a 6.5 c Maya Classic period is a gulf that the original millennium figures, being similar-looking small numbers, do a good job of hiding.
Climb back up when a span is quoted in centuries
The swap control (↔) reverses the pair, so a reign list totalling 21 c returns as 2.1 mil — the register a chapter heading or a museum panel is written in.
Move the figure into a chronology table
Copying returns digits only, with the unit dropped and the space that groups thousands removed, so 30.7 arrives in a cell as a number rather than as text that refuses to sort. Ctrl + C over a selection strips the spacing too.

The century column is where the proportions stop being abstract. The Near-Eastern Neolithic at 55 c outlasts dynastic Egypt and the Aegean Bronze Age put together, while the Maya Classic period and the Shang each occupy about a tenth of it. How much room a period is given in a syllabus turns out to bear very little relation to how much of the past it occupies.

Questions About Ancient Date Ranges
How wide is a period described only as "the third millennium BCE"?
Ten centuries, running from 3000 BCE down to 2001 BCE. Numbering before the common era counts backwards, so the block opens on the highest number and closes on the lowest, and the third such block is the third thousand years before the era begins. Ten centuries leaves room for an entire civilisation to appear and disappear inside the label, which is why the phrase works as a filing category rather than as a date. If you need to place an event within it, ask for the century: "the middle of the third millennium" and "c. 2500 BCE" say the same thing, but only one of them can be checked against evidence.
Why does the Bronze Age start at a different date in different places?
Because the age is defined by a technology rather than by a calendar. Bronze working appears in the Near East around 3300 BCE, in the Aegean around 3200, in Britain around 2500 and in China around 2000 — a spread of roughly 13 c for one named age. Several regions never passed through a bronze stage in that sense at all, moving from stone tools to iron, which is why the three-age scheme is applied unevenly outside Europe and the Near East. Whenever a text names an age, it is naming a stage that one particular region reached at one particular time.
Why do dynasties come out century-sized rather than millennium-sized?
Because a ruling house runs out of succession, revenue or legitimacy long before a thousand years are up. The longest in Chinese history, the Zhou at roughly 1046–256 BCE, gives 790 years, or 7.9 c — and for most of that stretch its authority was nominal while regional states did the actual governing. The Han, 206 BCE to 220 CE, works out at 426 years or 4.26 c; the Ottoman house from 1299 to 1922 gives 623 years or 6.23 c. Egypt makes the point most sharply: some thirty numbered dynasties are fitted into 30.7 c of dynastic history, an average of barely one century each. Convert any of them into millennia and you get a decimal below one, which is why the millennium column belongs to eras and the century column to the houses inside them.
How firm are the dates behind spans quoted in millennia?
Firmer at the recent end and much softer the further back you go. Egyptian dates rest on king lists cross-checked against astronomical observations and are usually good to a few decades by the New Kingdom, drifting to a century or more in the Old Kingdom. Mesopotamian chronology is worse: the high, middle and low schemes place the fall of Babylon at 1702, 1595 and 1531 BCE, which is 1.71 c of disagreement about a single event. Earlier than that, everything leans on radiocarbon, where a calibrated range one or two centuries wide is entirely normal. Treat a century figure derived from a millennium-scale label as an order of magnitude.
Does "c." in front of an ancient date carry a defined meaning?
No, and that is worth knowing before you convert anything attached to it. The abbreviation stands for circa and signals that the author does not regard the figure as exact, but it comes with no agreed tolerance whatsoever. In practice "c. 2600 BCE" on a Bronze Age context might mean give or take half a century, while the same prefix on a Palaeolithic date can conceal several millennia. Published radiocarbon ranges are a different matter: those carry a stated confidence interval and can be converted honestly. Where a source offers only "c.", any century figure you derive from it inherits an error bar nobody has written down.
