How do I convert an image to another format?

Which format should I use — JPG, PNG, or WebP?

What quality setting should I use?

Does converting an image lose quality?
It depends on the output. PNG, GIF, and BMP are lossless, so they keep all pixel data. JPEG, WebP, and AVIF are lossy, so quality depends on the slider — higher values look better but produce larger files. Converting a lossy source to PNG cannot restore detail already lost in the original.

Why does my converted file have a white background?
JPEG and BMP do not support transparency. When the source has transparent areas, such as a PNG, those areas are filled with white so they do not appear black. Convert to PNG, WebP, GIF, or AVIF to keep transparency intact.
Why is my converted file larger than the original?
This happens when you convert from a highly compressed format to a less compressed one — for example JPEG to PNG — or use very high quality settings. PNG and BMP outputs are usually bigger than JPEG or WebP because they use lossless or no compression.
