Liters to Quarts

Turns a service-manual fill in litres into US quarts, so you know how many bottles the oil, coolant or transmission change actually needs.

Reading a Metric Fill Capacity in Quarts

Service literature is written in litres almost everywhere, including for cars sold in the United States. The shelf at the parts counter is not: oil, coolant and transmission fluid arrive in quart bottles and five-quart jugs. So the practical question in front of an oil change is never really about units — it is how many bottles to carry to the till, and how much will be left over.

Conversion factor: 1 L = 1.056688209 US quarts, and 1 US quart = 0.946352946 L. A manual calling for 4.7 L of engine oil is asking for 4.7 × 1.056688209 = 4.966 quarts — so a single 5-quart jug covers it with roughly a thirtieth of a quart to spare.

Why the Two Scales Keep Meeting

The manual speaks metric

Capacity tables are generated once for a global platform, so the same 4.3 L figure appears whether the car is delivered in Ohio, Ontario or Osaka.

The shelf speaks quarts

US retail packaging is built around the quart: single bottles, five-quart jugs, and gear oil in quart squeeze bottles. Nothing on the shelf is sized to a litre figure.

A quart is slightly smaller

Close enough that people treat them as equal, and far enough apart to matter: five quarts is 4.73 L, so five litres of oil is not five quarts but a little over 5.28.

The dipstick has the final say

Published capacities are a starting point. Fill a little short of the figure, run the engine, let it settle and top up to the mark rather than pouring the whole container in.

The job is usually done standing in the aisle with a phone in one hand, so it is worth doing in the same order every time.

Type the capacity from the manual

Enter the litre figure exactly as printed — 4.3, 4.7, 6.6 — into the left field. The quart value appears as you type, and a comma is accepted as the decimal point if that is how the manual writes it.

Round up to whole containers

Fluid is sold in whole bottles, so a 6.97-quart answer means seven quarts on the counter: a five-quart jug plus two singles, or two jugs if you want spare for topping up.

Buy a margin, not an exact match. Filters retain fluid, some drains never fully empty, and a little always ends up on the drain pan. An extra quart on the shelf is cheaper than a second trip.

The pattern repeats down the column: the quart number is always about six per cent larger than the litre number, which is exactly why a "5 L" and a "5 qt" container are not interchangeable when a capacity sits close to the line.

How many quarts are in a litre?

1.056688209 US quarts, which most people round to 1.06. Going the other way, a quart is 0.946352946 L. The two sit close enough that a litre and a quart feel interchangeable in conversation, but the gap of roughly six per cent grows into a third of a quart by the time you reach a six-litre fill.

My engine takes 4.7 L — will one 5-quart jug do it?

Yes, just. 4.7 L is 4.966 quarts, and the jug holds 5 quarts (4.7318 L), leaving about 32 mL in the bottom. Pour most of it in, run the engine briefly, let it drain back and bring the level to the dipstick mark with what is left. Keep the empty jug for used oil — many recycling drop-offs prefer a sealed container.

The bottle in my hand is marked in imperial quarts — is that the same?

No. Some older UK and Canadian packaging uses the imperial quart, which is 1.1365225 L — about 20 per cent bigger than the US quart. Four imperial quarts is 4.55 L rather than 3.79 L. Most modern bottles print millilitres or litres as the legal quantity, so read the metric figure on the label and use that.

Why is motor oil sold in litres in some countries and quarts in others?

Packaging follows the local trade rules rather than the vehicle. The same oil from the same blender leaves the plant in 1 L and 4 L or 5 L containers for metric markets and in 1 qt and 5 qt containers for the United States. The specification on the label — the viscosity grade and the approvals — is what matters; the container size is just how the market buys it.

Why does the manual's capacity look smaller than what the engine actually holds?

Because most published figures are refill capacities, measured after a normal drain, while the dry-fill number for a fully empty system is larger. An automatic transmission is the clearest case: a pan drop might take 4 L when the whole unit, including the converter and cooler lines, holds more than twice that. Use the refill figure for routine service, keep the dry-fill figure for a rebuild, and let the dipstick or level plug settle the final amount.
