Putting a Crude Oil Barrel Figure into Litres
Upstream and trading paperwork counts in barrels: production in barrels per day, reserves in millions of barrels, cargoes in barrels loaded, and the crude price itself as dollars per barrel. The moment that number has to sit next to a metric quantity — a tank farm in cubic metres, a product volume in litres, a national energy balance — it needs converting, and the barrel is not a round metric number.

From a Production Report to a Metric Volume
The routine is the same whether the number came off a daily allocation sheet, a bill of lading or a reserves statement.
Enter the barrel quantity

Tanker and well entries are round trade descriptions rather than exact loadings, but the arithmetic beneath them is fixed: the metric columns are always the barrel count multiplied by 158.987294928.

Why is an oil barrel 42 gallons rather than a round number?
It survives from the wooden-cask era of the Pennsylvania oil fields. Coopers were turning out barrels in many sizes, and by the mid-1860s producers had settled on 42 gallons as the practical compromise: much larger was too heavy for two men and a horse-drawn wagon, much smaller pushed up the freight cost per gallon. The Petroleum Producers Association formalised it in 1872 and nobody revisited it since.
Is an oil barrel the same size as a beer barrel or a dry barrel?
No — "barrel" covers several different units. The petroleum barrel is 42 US gallons, or 158.99 L. A US beer barrel is 31 US gallons, 117.35 L. A US dry barrel, used for produce, is defined in cubic inches and works out at about 115.63 L. The traditional UK beer barrel of 36 imperial gallons is larger again at 163.66 L. Only the 42-gallon version is meant when a figure is written bbl.
How do barrels per day compare with tonnes per year?
There is no single answer, because tonnes measure mass and barrels measure volume: the bridge between them is density, usually expressed as API gravity. A light crude around 35° API runs at roughly 7.3 barrels to the tonne, a heavy grade nearer 6.7, and in practice the figure sits between about 6.1 and 7.6. One million tonnes a year of that light crude is therefore around 20,000 bbl/d — the same tonnage of a heavy grade is several thousand barrels a day lower, so use the grade's own factor.
Why is crude priced per barrel when cargoes are chartered by the tonne?
Volume is what a producer, a pipeline and a refinery all meter directly, and the barrel was already the industry's unit when the first benchmark contracts were written, so the futures markets inherited it — a standard crude lot is 1,000 barrels. Shipping is limited by deadweight, which is mass, so charters and port dues work in tonnes. A cargo therefore carries both numbers, tied together by the density of that grade.
Does one barrel of crude yield exactly one barrel of refined product?
It yields slightly more, which surprises people the first time they see the statistics. Cracking heavy molecules into lighter ones such as petrol gives a product slate whose combined volume exceeds the crude that went in, because the lighter products are less dense. Refiners call the difference processing gain; in the United States it typically adds a few per cent, so a 42-gallon input leaves as roughly 44 to 45 gallons of finished products. Mass is conserved — only the volume grows.
