Solar Lunar Converter

Solar Lunar Converter

Convert dates between solar (Gregorian) and lunar calendars with Can Chi, zodiac, solar terms, and holiday details.

Lunar to Solar Calendar Converter

The Solar Lunar Converter is a bidirectional date converter that moves any date between the Gregorian (solar) calendar and the traditional East Asian lunar calendar. Convert a lunar date to its solar equivalent, or look up the lunar date for any Gregorian day, in a single click.

Every result goes beyond the bare date. Each conversion also shows the Can Chi (Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches), the zodiac animal, the current solar term, and any traditional holiday, with terminology that adapts to Vietnamese, Chinese, or Korean tradition based on your language setting.

How it works: conversions are calculated on the server with the established lunar-php (6tail) calendar library, and your recent lookups are stored only in your own browser. No personal data is saved server-side.

How to Use the Solar Lunar Converter

1

Choose a direction

Pick Solar → Lunar to convert a Gregorian date, or Lunar → Solar to start from a lunar date. The tool opens in Solar → Lunar mode by default.

2

Enter the date

In Solar → Lunar mode, click the date field to open the calendar and pick a day. In Lunar → Solar mode, choose the year, month, and day from the dropdowns. Years with a leap month are marked with a ✦, and the leap month appears as its own option (for example, "4 (Leap)").

3

Read the result

The result card updates instantly with the converted date plus its Can Chi, zodiac animal, solar term, and holiday. Use the Today button to jump back to the current date at any time.

4

Swap, copy, or revisit

Tap Swap direction to reverse the conversion while keeping the current result, click Copy Result to copy a formatted summary, or open History to re-run a recent lookup.

Features

Bidirectional Conversion

Convert either way with one toggle — Solar (Gregorian) to Lunar, or Lunar to Solar — with the input method tailored to each direction.

Automatic Leap Month Detection

Years that contain a leap month are flagged with a ✦, and the leap month slots into the dropdown automatically — with day counts (29 or 30) adjusted for you.

Rich Almanac Information

Each result shows Can Chi for the year, month, and day, the zodiac animal, the 24 solar terms, and traditional holidays when they apply.

Instant Swap

Reverse the conversion direction while carrying over the current values, so you can check both the solar and lunar side of any date with one tap.

Copy to Clipboard

Copy a complete summary — both dates, Can Chi, zodiac animal, solar term, and holiday — to your clipboard in one click.

Conversion History

Your last 10 conversions are saved locally in your browser. Click any entry to restore and re-run it, or clear the list at any time.

Multi-Locale Support

Terminology, Can Chi names, zodiac animals, holiday names, and date formatting all adapt to Vietnamese, Chinese (Simplified), or Korean tradition.

Server-Side Initial Rendering

The first load shows today's conversion rendered on the server for speed and search visibility, with later lookups handled dynamically.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert a lunar date to solar?

Switch to Lunar → Solar mode, then choose the lunar year, month, and day from the dropdowns. If the year has a leap month, pick the regular month or the one labelled "(Leap)". The result card immediately shows the matching Gregorian date along with the full almanac details.

Can I convert a solar date back to lunar?

Yes. The tool is bidirectional. Use Solar → Lunar mode and pick a Gregorian date from the calendar to see its lunar equivalent. You can also press Swap direction to flip between the two sides of any date you have already converted.

What is the difference between the solar and lunar calendar?

The solar (Gregorian) calendar follows Earth's orbit around the Sun, with fixed month lengths totaling 365 or 366 days a year. The lunar calendar follows the Moon's phases, with each month starting on a new moon and averaging about 29.5 days. That makes the lunar year roughly 11 days shorter, so leap months are added periodically to keep the two calendars aligned.

How do leap months affect the conversion?

A leap month is an extra month inserted into certain years — roughly every 2 to 3 years — to keep the lunar calendar in step with the seasons. The converter detects leap months automatically: those years are marked with a ✦, and the leap month appears as a separate "(Leap)" option in the month dropdown, so you never have to calculate it yourself.

What is Can Chi?

Can Chi (Gan Zhi in Chinese, Gapja in Korean) is a traditional cycle that pairs 10 Heavenly Stems with 12 Earthly Branches to form a repeating 60-unit sequence. It designates years, months, and days in the East Asian calendar. The converter shows the Can Chi for the month and day of any result, plus the year designation alongside the zodiac animal.

What are solar terms?

Solar terms (Tiet Khi in Vietnamese, Jieqi in Chinese) are 24 points in the year set by the Sun's position along the ecliptic. They mark seasonal transitions and have long guided agriculture and traditional practices. When a converted date falls on or near a solar term, it is highlighted in the result card.

Why does the Vietnamese zodiac use a Cat instead of a Rabbit?

In Vietnamese tradition the fourth zodiac animal is the Cat (Meo) rather than the Rabbit. The exact reason is debated, but a common theory links it to the similar pronunciation of the Earthly Branch "Mao" and the Vietnamese word for cat. With Vietnamese selected, the converter displays the Cat zodiac correctly.

Which lunar calendar does this tool use?

Conversions are calculated with the established lunar-php (6tail) calendar library, which covers a wide range of years and correctly accounts for leap months and varying month lengths. The output then adapts to Vietnamese, Chinese, or Korean conventions based on your language setting.

Is my data stored anywhere?

Your conversion history is kept only in your browser's local storage and is never uploaded. Each conversion sends the date to the server to be calculated, but no personal data is retained server-side. Clear the history whenever you like with the Clear button.
