Frequently Asked Questions
How many countries are supported?
The Holiday Calendar covers 199 countries and territories, including all major economies and most smaller nations. The data is sourced from the date-holidays open-source library, which is regularly maintained and updated.
What year range is available?
You can browse holidays from 2024 through 2030. Use the year navigation arrows to switch between years. This 7-year range allows you to plan ahead for future events or reference past holidays.
What is the difference between "Public" and "Observance"?
Public holidays are official days off recognized by the government — most workers and schools are closed. Observances are commemorative or awareness days (like Valentine's Day or Earth Day) that are not official days off.
Official Day Off
- Government recognized
- Most businesses closed
- Schools closed
- Paid time off
Commemorative Day
- Cultural or awareness day
- Normal working day
- No official closure
- Optional celebration
Why are some holiday names not in English?
Holiday names are shown in the country's local language to reflect how they are officially known and to preserve cultural authenticity. When the local name differs from English, an English translation is displayed underneath for accessibility.
How does the country auto-detection work?
The tool detects your preferred country based on your browser language setting. For example, if your browser is set to Vietnamese, it defaults to Vietnam. If set to Japanese, it defaults to Japan. You can change the country at any time using the dropdown selector.
What does "Substitute" mean on a holiday?
A substitute holiday occurs when an official holiday falls on a weekend and the government designates a nearby weekday as the replacement day off. This ensures workers still receive their entitled day off even when the actual holiday date falls on Saturday or Sunday.
Is the holiday data accurate?
The data is generated from the well-maintained date-holidays library, which is regularly updated by contributors worldwide. However, governments may announce holiday changes after our data was generated.
Can I search for a country in my own language?
Yes. The search supports local names (e.g., typing in Japanese, Korean, or Arabic), English names, country codes, and is accent-insensitive so diacritical marks are not required.
Examples of supported searches:
- "日本" or "Japan" or "JP" — all find Japan
- "viet nam" or "Việt Nam" or "VN" — all find Vietnam
- "대한민국" or "South Korea" or "KR" — all find South Korea
