What Is the Eisenhower Matrix?
The Eisenhower Matrix is a simple yet powerful productivity framework that helps you prioritize tasks based on two criteria: urgency and importance. Named after President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was known for his exceptional ability to manage time and priorities, this method divides your tasks into four clear quadrants.
The Four Quadrants
Do First Urgent & Important
Tasks that need immediate attention. These are deadlines, crises, or pressing problems that cannot wait.
- Critical deadlines
- Emergency situations
- Last-minute preparations
Schedule Important, Not Urgent
Tasks that matter for long-term goals but don't need to be done right now. Plan these for later to ensure consistent progress.
- Strategic planning
- Skill development
- Relationship building
Delegate Urgent, Not Important
Tasks that need to happen soon but don't require your personal involvement. Assign these to others when possible.
- Routine requests
- Administrative tasks
- Some meetings
Eliminate Not Urgent, Not Important
Tasks that add little value and consume your time. Consider removing these from your to-do list entirely.
- Time-wasting activities
- Excessive social media
- Busy work
Why Use It?
Reactive Approach
- Constantly firefighting urgent tasks
- Important goals get neglected
- Feeling overwhelmed and stressed
- No clear prioritization system
Proactive Strategy
- Clear visibility of priorities
- Focus on long-term goals
- Reduced stress and overwhelm
- Strategic time allocation
What is important is seldom urgent and what is urgent is seldom important.
— Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th President of the United States
