Ounces to Pounds

Turns the ounce net weight printed on a US grocery package into the pound figure a shelf tag is priced on, so you can tell which size is genuinely cheaper.

The Package Says Ounces, the Shelf Tag Says Per Pound

Two cans of the same crushed tomatoes sit on the same shelf. The small one is 15 oz at $1.89; the big one is 28 oz at $3.99. The big one looks like the sensible buy, and it is not. Fifteen ounces is 0.9375 lb, so the small can works out at about $2.02 a pound; twenty-eight ounces is 1.75 lb, which puts the big can at $2.28. Buying the larger size costs you roughly a quarter more per pound.

None of that is visible from the front of the label. American packaged food declares its contents in ounces, sometimes to a decimal place, while the price comparison printed beside the sticker price is quoted per pound. The only thing joining them is a division by sixteen, and doing that in your head while a cart goes past is how people end up paying more for the bigger box.

Conversion factor: 16 oz = 1 lb exactly, so lb = oz ÷ 16. A 12 oz bag is 0.75 lb, a 20 oz loaf is 1.25 lb, and a 10.5 oz soup can is 0.65625 lb.

What the Two Numbers on a Shelf Tag Are Doing

The net weight is the promise

The ounce figure on the front panel covers the contents only, never the jar, the tray or the cardboard. It is the quantity the retailer is actually selling you.

The small print is the real price

The retail price sits in large type; the price per pound sits in small type beside it. Only the second one lets you rank two sizes against each other.

Sixteen is the only bridge

Package ounces and shelf pounds never line up until you divide. Odd sizes such as 10.5 oz or 13 oz land on decimals nobody carries around in their head.

Sizes drift, prices hold

A jar that was 18 oz last year may be 16 oz this year at the same money. The front price is unchanged; the pound figure quietly went up by an eighth.

Type the net weight off the front panel

Put the ounce figure into the left box exactly as printed — 15, 10.5, 13.75. Pounds appear as you type, with no button to press. A comma works in place of the dot and stray spaces are ignored.

Divide the shelf price by that pound figure

The result on the right is what the sticker price gets divided by. A $3.99 can at 1.75 lb is $2.28 per pound, which is the number the shelf tag quotes and the number worth comparing.

Reverse it when the tag is per ounce

Both boxes accept typing, so a pound figure entered on the right gives you ounces on the left. The swap button (↔) flips the pair outright when a whole aisle is tagged per ounce instead.

Copy the figure into your shopping sheet

Compare like with like: a per-pound figure only ranks two products fairly when both tags use the same base. A store that prices one brand per pound and its neighbour per ounce has made the shelf unreadable until you convert one of them.

Only one line there lands on a round pound, and it belongs to the one category that has always been sold in pound units. Everything else produces a decimal, which is precisely why the per-pound figure has to be printed for you rather than worked out at the shelf. Notice too how the awkward sizes cluster where brands compete hardest — soup, cereal, snacks — while the tidy 8 oz and 16 oz sizes belong to staples whose price everybody already knows by heart.

Questions About Net Weight and Shelf Tags

What is the difference between net weight and drained weight on a can?

Net weight covers everything inside the can, solids plus the liquid they sit in. Drained weight is what remains on the sieve once the packing water, brine or juice has run off. A 15 oz can of chickpeas typically drains to somewhere around 9 or 10 oz of chickpeas, so the two figures can differ by roughly a third. Cans of fruit and vegetables packed in liquid normally show both, and the drained figure is the honest basis for comparing what you get for the money. Products where the liquid is part of the food, soup and baked beans among them, quote net weight alone because draining them makes no sense.

Why does a label print "1 lb 4 oz (567 g)" instead of just 20 oz?

That is the dual declaration the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act asks for. Once a package passes a pound, the customary statement may be given in the pound-and-ounce form, and a metric statement has to appear alongside it. So twenty ounces becomes "1 lb 4 oz" and carries its 567 g equivalent in brackets, since an ounce is 28.349523125 g. Many labels add the plain total in parentheses as well, giving you all three at once. When you are comparing sizes, collapse the composite back to a single number first: 1 lb 4 oz is 20 oz is 1.25 lb, and only that last form divides into a price.

How is the unit price on a shelf tag calculated, and why do two tags use different bases?

A retailer takes the shelf price and divides by the declared quantity, expressed in whatever base the category conventionally uses — pounds for most solid food, ounces for small packaged goods, per hundred for paper napkins, per item for produce sold by the piece. Unit pricing is mandatory in some states and voluntary elsewhere, which is why one chain tags a brand per pound and the next tags it per ounce. Trouble starts when two neighbouring products on one shelf carry different bases: a $0.19 per ounce tag and a $2.89 per pound tag look unrelated until you notice the first works out at $3.04 per pound. Read the base before reading the number.

The package looks the same but feels lighter — how do I confirm it shrank?

Compare declared weights, never box dimensions. Cartons and bags are usually left the same size on purpose, so the giveaway is the ounce figure on the front panel. When a jar drops from 18 oz to 16 oz at unchanged money, the sticker tells you nothing while the per-pound cost jumps by 12.5%. Old receipts rarely record the size, so the practical habit is to note the ounce figure for the things you buy repeatedly, convert it once, and keep the resulting pound price beside the item name. That column is what makes a quiet size change obvious the next time round.

Why is loose produce priced by the pound while the deli sticker shows a package price too?

Because one is weighed in front of you and the other was weighed before you arrived. Loose apples have no fixed quantity, so the only honest way to price them is a rate per pound applied at the checkout scale. Deli meats and cut cheese are sliced to order and then wrapped, at which point the item has a definite weight, so the sticker carries the rate per pound you agreed to, the weight of that particular package, and the money those two multiply out to. Any random-weight item behaves the same way, and the middle number is the one to convert if you want to know how much meat is really in there. A pre-packed tray of six apples is different again: it has been given a fixed net weight and is often tagged per item instead.
