What Is a Typing Speed Test?
A typing speed test measures how fast and accurately you type on a keyboard, reporting your speed in WPM (words per minute) and CPM (characters per minute) alongside an accuracy percentage. Start typing the words shown and your stats update live, second by second, until the timer runs out.
Whether you are a student, a professional in a data-entry or administrative role, or simply sharpening your keyboard skills, the test gives you a clear number to track. The average typist sits around 40 WPM, proficient office workers reach 50–70 WPM, and expert typists push past 100 WPM with high accuracy. A built-in speed-level scale shows exactly where you land.
How to Take the Test
Set up your test
Pick a Language, a text mode (Words, Sentences, or Custom), a difficulty (Easy, Medium, Hard, or Mixed), and a time limit from 15 seconds up to 5 minutes.
Start typing
The timer starts on your first keystroke. Type each word and press Space to move on. In Custom mode, paste your own text first and click Apply.
Watch the live stats
Correct words turn green and mistakes turn red. The stats panel tracks your WPM, CPM, accuracy, and character count in real time as the timer counts down.
Read your result
When time is up, a result card shows your final WPM, CPM, accuracy, speed level, and the words you mistyped. Save it to the leaderboard or just hit Try Again.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good typing speed (WPM)?
The average typing speed is around 40 WPM. For most office jobs, 50–60 WPM is considered proficient, while professional typists and data-entry specialists often reach 65–75 WPM or higher. Competitive typists can exceed 100–150 WPM.
How is WPM calculated?
WPM divides the number of correctly typed characters by 5 (the standard word length), then by the time in minutes. For example, 250 correct characters in one minute equals 50 WPM. Character-based languages such as Chinese are scored per character instead, so the test shows CPM as the main metric.
What is the difference between WPM and CPM?
WPM measures words per minute using a standardized 5-character word, while CPM counts the actual characters you typed (CPM = WPM × 5 for English). CPM is useful when comparing typing across languages, where average word length varies.
Does accuracy matter more than speed?
High speed with low accuracy is counterproductive, because you lose time fixing mistakes. Typing 60 WPM at 98% accuracy is more effective than 80 WPM at 85%. Focus on accuracy first and speed tends to follow naturally.
How can I improve my typing speed?
Practice regularly, learn proper touch-typing technique with correct finger placement, and keep your eyes on the screen instead of the keys. Use all ten fingers rather than hunting and pecking, maintain good posture, and prioritize accuracy before pushing for raw speed. The built-in history chart helps you track the improvement.
Does the test work on mobile devices?
It runs on phones and tablets, but it is designed primarily for physical keyboards. For an accurate reading, use a desktop or laptop with a standard keyboard, since on-screen keyboards make typing slower and less representative of your true speed.
Is my typing data saved?
Your keystrokes are processed entirely in your browser as you type, and your test history is stored only on your own device. Nothing is uploaded unless you choose to: only when you enter a name and tap Save & Share is a result sent to the leaderboard, and joining a multiplayer room shares your live progress with that room.
