How to Use Sticky Notes

1

Creating Notes

Click the Add Note button in the toolbar to create a new note. Each note appears in a random color at an open position on the canvas that doesn't overlap existing notes. The title field is automatically focused so you can start typing right away.

2

Editing Content

Click the title area to edit the note's title. Click the content area below to write your note body. The content area supports rich text — hover over the note to reveal the format toolbar at the bottom with options for bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, bullet lists, numbered lists, and text colors.

3

Changing Note Color

Hover over a note and click the small color dot to the left of the title. A dropdown with 6 color options appears. Select a color to instantly change the note's background, accent bar, and color indicator.

4

Moving and Resizing Notes

To move a note, click and drag the title bar area (anywhere except input fields and buttons). To resize a note, drag the small handle at the bottom-right corner. Both position and size are saved automatically.

5

Navigating the Board

When the canvas extends beyond the visible area, hold right-click and drag to pan and scroll the board in any direction. You can also use the browser's native scrollbars for navigation.

6

Searching and Filtering

Use the search box in the toolbar to find notes by title or content. Click the color dots in the toolbar to filter notes by color, or click All to show everything. The counter displays how many notes match your current filters.

7

Layout Toggle

On wide screens (1400px+), click the expand icon in the toolbar to switch between standard width (1300px max) and full-width layout for more canvas space.

Features

Free-Form Canvas

Notes are placed on an infinite canvas with a subtle dot grid pattern. Drag notes to any position, and the board automatically expands to accommodate your layout. Right-click and drag to pan across the canvas for seamless navigation of large workspaces.

Pro Tip: The canvas automatically expands as you add more notes, giving you unlimited space to organize your thoughts visually.

Rich Text Formatting

The floating format toolbar appears when you hover over a note, providing quick access to text styling without cluttering the interface. This context-sensitive design keeps your workspace clean while giving you powerful formatting options when you need them.

Text Styling

Bold, italic, underline, and strikethrough for emphasis and clarity.

List Formatting

Create bullet and numbered lists to organize content into structured formats.

Text Colors

Highlight important text with red, blue, green, orange, or purple colors.
Smart Paste: When pasting content from external sources, the app automatically sanitizes the HTML to keep only safe formatting tags, protecting your notes from unwanted styles.

Color Coding System

Choose from 6 distinct color themes for your notes: yellow, pink, blue, green, purple, and orange. Each color includes a matching background, left accent bar, and color indicator dot. Use colors to categorize notes by topic, priority, project, or any organizational system you prefer.

Yellow

Classic sticky note color, perfect for general ideas and reminders.

Pink

Stand out with vibrant pink for urgent tasks or important highlights.

Blue

Cool and professional, ideal for work-related notes and planning.

Green

Fresh and calming, great for completed tasks or positive notes.

Purple

Creative and distinctive, perfect for brainstorming and ideas.

Orange

Energetic and warm, excellent for priorities and action items.

Drag and Resize

Drag notes by the title bar to reposition them on the canvas with pixel-perfect precision. Resize any note by dragging the corner handle at the bottom-right to fit your content perfectly. Minimum dimensions are enforced to keep notes readable (180px wide, 100px tall), ensuring your content remains accessible.

Search and Filter

Quickly find notes using the search bar, which matches against both titles and content (stripping HTML for accurate text search). Color filter buttons let you narrow down to specific note colors instantly. The counter shows the number of visible notes out of the total, helping you track your filtered results.

  • Real-time search as you type
  • Filter by single or multiple colors
  • Case-insensitive matching
  • Search through formatted text content

Smart Positioning

New notes are automatically placed in the first available position that doesn't overlap existing notes. The algorithm scans the visible area using a grid-based approach to find open space efficiently, ensuring your canvas stays organized even as you add many notes.

Auto-Save

Every change — text edits, position moves, resizing, color changes — is automatically saved to your browser's local storage. Your notes persist across page reloads and browser sessions, so you never have to worry about losing your work.

Instant Persistence: Changes are saved immediately as you make them. No save button needed, no waiting, no data loss.

Dark Mode

Full dark mode support with carefully tuned colors for comfortable note-taking in low-light environments. All note colors, toolbar elements, and board canvas adapt to the dark theme automatically, reducing eye strain during extended use.

Touch Support

On mobile and tablet devices, you can drag notes and resize them using touch gestures. Interactive elements like buttons and inputs work naturally with touch interaction, making Sticky Notes fully functional on any device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are my notes saved?

All notes are saved in your browser's local storage. They persist across page reloads and browser sessions but are specific to the browser and device you're using. This means your notes stay private and accessible offline, but won't sync across different browsers or devices.

Can I export or backup my notes?

Currently, notes are stored locally in your browser. Clearing your browser data will remove saved notes, so keep this in mind when managing your browser settings. Consider taking screenshots of important note boards as a backup method.

Why can't I see the full-width toggle button?

The layout toggle button only appears on screens wider than 1400px. On smaller screens, the standard layout is used automatically to ensure optimal readability and usability. This responsive design adapts to your screen size for the best experience.

How do I scroll the board when it's larger than the screen?

Hold the right mouse button and drag to pan the board in any direction. You can also use the browser's scrollbars that appear when notes extend beyond the visible area. On touch devices, use two-finger drag gestures to pan the canvas.

Can I format text in my notes?

Yes. Hover over a note to reveal the format toolbar at the bottom. You can apply bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, create lists, and change text colors. Select text first, then click the desired format button. The toolbar appears contextually to keep your workspace clean.

Why do new notes appear in random colors?

New notes are assigned a random color from the 6 available themes to add visual variety and make your board more engaging. You can instantly change the color by clicking the color dot next to the note's title. This random assignment helps create a visually diverse canvas automatically.

Is there a limit to how many notes I can create?

There is no hard limit on the number of notes. However, since data is stored in the browser's local storage, very large numbers of notes with extensive content may approach storage limits (typically 5-10 MB depending on the browser). For most users, this allows for hundreds or even thousands of notes.
