Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate net profit after marketplace fees?
Net profit is your selling price minus product cost, shipping cost, and every marketplace fee (referral or final value, payment processing, listing, and any other fees). Enter those numbers and the calculator does the subtraction live, showing the result in green for a profit or red for a loss, alongside your profit margin and ROI.
How much does eBay charge sellers?
eBay charges a final value fee on the total sale — around 13.6% for most categories, with some categories higher (Books & Media at 15.3%) or lower (Guitars & Basses at 6.7%). On top of that there is a $0.40 per-order fee. The calculator covers 18 eBay categories and lets you adjust any rate in Fee Settings.
What are Etsy fees per sale?
Etsy charges a flat 6.5% transaction fee on the sale, plus payment processing and a $0.20 listing fee per item. If a sale comes from an offsite advertising click, Etsy adds an offsite ads fee — enter that in the Offsite Ads field, which defaults to $0 since it only applies to specific sales.
Why does Amazon have tiered categories like "Clothing (≤$15)" and "Clothing (>$20)"?
Amazon uses price-based tiered referral fees for some categories. Clothing items at $15 or below are charged 5%, items from $15 to $20 are 10%, and items over $20 are 17%. Select the tier that matches your product's selling price so the referral fee is accurate.
What is the $1.80 closing fee for Amazon media items?
Amazon adds a fixed $1.80 closing fee per item on media categories — Books, Music & DVD, and Video Games — on top of the referral fee. The calculator applies it automatically when you select one of these categories, and it shows as a separate line in the fee breakdown.
Why do Shopify payment rates change when I switch plans?
Shopify Payments processing rates vary by plan: Basic (2.9%), Grow (2.7%), Advanced (2.5%), and Plus (2.15%), each plus a fixed per-transaction fee. Picking a plan sets the matching rate automatically. If you use a third-party gateway instead, choose the matching "+ 3rd Party Gateway" option to include Shopify's extra transaction fee.
How is ROI calculated?
ROI (return on investment) is net profit divided by your invested cost — product cost plus shipping cost — expressed as a percentage. It shows how hard your money works, which is why a product can have a modest margin but a strong ROI when the cost of goods is low. Profit margin, by contrast, is net profit as a share of the selling price.
Which marketplace has the lowest seller fees?
It depends on your product and price. Etsy's flat 6.5% can beat eBay's ~13.6% or Amazon's 15% referral on many items, but listing fees, payment processing, and category rates all shift the math. Run the same selling price and costs through each calculator and compare the net profit and total fees side by side to see which platform actually keeps you the most.
Are the fee rates accurate?
The rates are based on each marketplace's published fee schedules, including Amazon's tiered referral pricing, eBay's per-order fee, and Etsy and Shopify's current rates. Marketplaces can change fees at any time, so the rates are starting points — always confirm against the official fee schedule, and edit any value in Fee Settings to match.
