The Three Places the Yard Refused to Die

The yard has been pushed out of almost everything, but it is entrenched in three corners that all involve counting: the markings on an American football field, the numbers on a golf scorecard, and the way cloth is sold across a counter in the United States. Each one leaves a metric reader guessing by roughly nine percent, which is enough to matter on a par three and enough to leave a dress pattern short.

A yard is defined as exactly 0.9144 m, so m = yards × 0.9144. A 100-yard field is 100 × 0.9144 = 91.44 m, and a metre is about 9.4% longer than a yard.

If your clubs are calibrated in metres, a 150-yard approach is 137 m — most of a club shorter than the number on the card suggests.

Round the safe way for cloth

Fabric is one place to round up. Three yards is 2.74 m, so ask for 2.75 or a full 3 m rather than trusting the shortfall.

The reverse direction is the one European golfers need most: a rangefinder or a card in metres, and a swing calibrated in yards from watching the sport. Press the swap arrows and metres go into the top field instead.

Reach Centimetres for Hems and Seams

Width is the other half of a fabric order. American bolts run 45 in or 60 in wide, which is 114 cm or 152 cm. A pattern written for the narrower cloth needs more length if you buy the wide one, and less the other way round.

Yardage and Fabric Questions

How long is a 100-yard field in metres?

91.44 m between the goal lines. A football pitch is 100 to 110 m long, so a soccer field will always be longer than the American one it is compared with — usually by ten metres or more.

Why is a football field really 120 yards?

The hundred yards everyone quotes is only the field of play. Each end zone adds ten yards, taking the full surface to 120 yd, or 109.73 m. It is also 53⅓ yd wide, which is 48.77 m — the fraction is a genuine part of the rule.

Do rangefinders read in yards or metres?

Both — it is a setting, and it is worth checking before the first tee. A device left in metres on a card printed in yards reads about 9% short, which sends approach shots into the front bunker with impressive consistency.

How much metric cloth replaces three yards?

2.74 m, so ask for 2.75 m and you are covered. The error runs the friendly way too: buying three metres gives you 3.28 yards, a quarter of a yard more than the pattern asked for, which is a cheap insurance policy against a cutting mistake.

Is a metre close enough to call a yard?

For pacing out a garden, yes. For anything scored or cut, no. The 9.4% gap is one club on a golf approach, nearly ten metres across a football field, and a shortfall of more than 25 cm on a three-yard length of cloth.
