What is a Golf Handicap?

A golf handicap is a numerical measure of a golfer's ability, allowing players of different skill levels to compete fairly against each other. The World Handicap System (WHS) provides a unified, global standard for calculating handicaps.

WHS Implementation: This calculator implements all three key WHS calculations to provide comprehensive handicap management in one tool.

Score Differential

Measures how you performed relative to the course difficulty on a single round

Handicap Index

Your portable handicap number, derived from your best recent Score Differentials

Course Handicap

Converts your Handicap Index into the number of strokes you receive on a specific course

Key Terms

Course Rating

The expected score for a scratch (expert) golfer

  • Typically between 68-76
  • Represents course difficulty for skilled players

Slope Rating

Measures difficulty for bogey golfers relative to scratch golfers

  • Ranges from 55 to 155
  • 113 is standard difficulty

PCC (Playing Conditions Calculation)

An adjustment for unusual playing conditions

  • Accounts for extreme weather
  • Ranges from −1 to +3

Adjusted Gross Score

Your total strokes with maximum per-hole limits applied

  • Prevents one bad hole from skewing results
  • Uses Net Double Bogey cap

How to Use

Score Differential

Calculate the differential for a single round:

1

Enter Adjusted Gross Score

Input your total strokes for the round

2

Add Course Details

Enter the Course Rating and Slope Rating from the scorecard

3

Select PCC Value

Choose the PCC value (usually 0 unless conditions were unusual)

Score Differential Formula
(113 / Slope Rating) × (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating − PCC)

Handicap Index

Build your Handicap Index from multiple rounds:

1

Enter Round Data

Input the score, course rating, and slope rating for each round

2

Add to Your List

Click Add Round to add it to your rounds history

3

Automatic Calculation

After adding at least 3 rounds, your Handicap Index is calculated automatically

4

Review Best Differentials

The best differentials used in the calculation are highlighted in green

Smart Selection: The number of differentials used depends on total rounds entered (e.g., best 1 of 3-5 rounds, best 8 of 20 rounds).

Course Handicap

Convert your Handicap Index for a specific course:

1

Enter Handicap Index

Input your current Handicap Index

2

Add Course Information

Enter the course's Slope Rating, Course Rating, and Par

3

Get Your Course Handicap

Click Calculate to get your Course Handicap for that specific course

Course Handicap Formula
Handicap Index × (Slope Rating / 113) + (Course Rating − Par)

  • Statistical adjustments applied for fewer rounds (e.g., −2.0 for 3 rounds, −1.0 for 4 rounds)
  • Handicap Index capped between 0.0 and 54.0
  • PCC adjustment support (−1 to +3)

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rounds do I need to calculate a Handicap Index?

You need a minimum of 3 rounds to get a Handicap Index. However, the more rounds you enter (up to 20), the more accurate your index will be. With 20 rounds, the calculator uses the average of your best 8 differentials.

Accuracy Tip: More rounds provide a more stable and representative Handicap Index that better reflects your true playing ability.

What is the difference between Handicap Index and Course Handicap?

Your Handicap Index is a portable number that represents your overall playing ability. Your Course Handicap is calculated for a specific course, taking into account that course's Slope Rating, Course Rating, and Par.

Handicap Index

Universal Number

  • Portable across all courses
  • Represents overall ability
  • Same number everywhere
Course Handicap

Course-Specific

  • Adjusted for specific course
  • Accounts for difficulty
  • Changes by course and tees

Two golfers with the same Handicap Index may have different Course Handicaps on different courses.

Where do I find Course Rating and Slope Rating?

These numbers are printed on the course scorecard, usually near the tee box information. They vary by tee (e.g., back tees vs. forward tees).

  • Check the course scorecard near tee box information
  • Visit the golf course's official website
  • Contact your national golf association
  • Ask the pro shop or starter
Important: Always use the ratings that match the tee boxes you played from, as they differ significantly between tee sets.

What is PCC (Playing Conditions Calculation)?

PCC is an automatic adjustment that accounts for unusual playing conditions (extreme weather, course setup changes). It ranges from −1 to +3. On most days, PCC is 0.

Typical PCC Value 0

Your golf club or association will publish the PCC value for each day. Check with your club's handicap committee or online portal for daily PCC adjustments.

What is an Adjusted Gross Score?

It's your actual score with a maximum per-hole cap applied. Under WHS, the maximum score on any hole is Net Double Bogey (Par + 2 + handicap strokes received on that hole). This prevents one bad hole from disproportionately affecting your handicap.

Net Double Bogey Formula
Maximum Score = Par + 2 + Handicap Strokes on Hole
Fair Play: This cap ensures that one disastrous hole doesn't unfairly inflate your handicap, providing a more accurate measure of your typical performance.

Why does my index change when I remove a round?

The Handicap Index recalculates using the remaining rounds. Since the number of best differentials used depends on total rounds available, removing a round may change which differentials are selected and how many are used.

Total Rounds Differentials Used Adjustment
3 Best 1 −2.0
4 Best 1 −1.0
5 Best 1 −1.0
6 Best 2 −1.0
20 Best 8 None

This dynamic calculation ensures your Handicap Index always reflects the most accurate representation of your current playing ability based on available data.
