What is a Golf Handicap?
A golf handicap is a numerical measure of a golfer's ability, allowing players of different skill levels to compete fairly against each other. The World Handicap System (WHS) provides a unified, global standard for calculating handicaps.

Key Terms
Course Rating
The expected score for a scratch (expert) golfer
- Typically between 68-76
- Represents course difficulty for skilled players
Slope Rating
Measures difficulty for bogey golfers relative to scratch golfers
- Ranges from 55 to 155
- 113 is standard difficulty
PCC (Playing Conditions Calculation)
An adjustment for unusual playing conditions
- Accounts for extreme weather

All formulas follow the official World Handicap System rules:
- Correct number of best differentials selected based on total rounds (1 of 3 up to 8 of 20)
- Statistical adjustments applied for fewer rounds (e.g., −2.0 for 3 rounds, −1.0 for 4 rounds)
- Handicap Index capped between 0.0 and 54.0
- PCC adjustment support (−1 to +3)

Frequently Asked Questions
How many rounds do I need to calculate a Handicap Index?
You need a minimum of 3 rounds to get a Handicap Index. However, the more rounds you enter (up to 20), the more accurate your index will be. With 20 rounds, the calculator uses the average of your best 8 differentials.
What is the difference between Handicap Index and Course Handicap?
Your Handicap Index is a portable number that represents your overall playing ability. Your Course Handicap is calculated for a specific course, taking into account that course's Slope Rating, Course Rating, and Par.
Universal Number
- Portable across all courses
- Represents overall ability
- Same number everywhere
Course-Specific
- Adjusted for specific course
- Accounts for difficulty
- Changes by course and tees
Two golfers with the same Handicap Index may have different Course Handicaps on different courses.
Where do I find Course Rating and Slope Rating?
These numbers are printed on the course scorecard, usually near the tee box information. They vary by tee (e.g., back tees vs. forward tees).
- Check the course scorecard near tee box information
- Visit the golf course's official website
- Contact your national golf association
- Ask the pro shop or starter
What is PCC (Playing Conditions Calculation)?
PCC is an automatic adjustment that accounts for unusual playing conditions (extreme weather, course setup changes). It ranges from −1 to +3. On most days, PCC is 0.
Your golf club or association will publish the PCC value for each day. Check with your club's handicap committee or online portal for daily PCC adjustments.
What is an Adjusted Gross Score?
It's your actual score with a maximum per-hole cap applied. Under WHS, the maximum score on any hole is Net Double Bogey (Par + 2 + handicap strokes received on that hole). This prevents one bad hole from disproportionately affecting your handicap.
Maximum Score = Par + 2 + Handicap Strokes on Hole
Why does my index change when I remove a round?
The Handicap Index recalculates using the remaining rounds. Since the number of best differentials used depends on total rounds available, removing a round may change which differentials are selected and how many are used.
| Total Rounds | Differentials Used | Adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Best 1 | −2.0 |
| 4 | Best 1 | −1.0 |
| 5 | Best 1 | −1.0 |
| 6 | Best 2 | −1.0 |
| 20 | Best 8 | None |
This dynamic calculation ensures your Handicap Index always reflects the most accurate representation of your current playing ability based on available data.
