How do you calculate horsepower from torque and RPM?
Horsepower equals torque multiplied by RPM, divided by 5,252: HP = (Torque × RPM) / 5,252. Torque must be in lb-ft for this formula — if you enter Nm, the calculator converts it first. This is the most accurate method because it uses direct engine measurements, usually from a dynamometer.
What is the 5,252 constant in the horsepower formula?
5,252 is the RPM at which horsepower and torque are always numerically equal. It comes from the definition of one horsepower (33,000 ft-lb per minute) divided by 2π, which works out to about 5,252. Dividing torque × RPM by this constant converts the result into horsepower.
How do you estimate HP from quarter-mile trap speed?
The trap-speed method uses HP = (Trap Speed / 234)³ × Vehicle Weight, with speed in mph and weight in lbs. Trap speed is your vehicle's speed at the finish line of the quarter mile, recorded on the timing slip. Enter total weight including the driver for the closest estimate.
How accurate is the trap-speed (and ET) horsepower estimate?
They are empirical estimates, not direct measurements. The quarter-mile ET and trap-speed formulas approximate power at the wheels and are affected by tire grip, traction, launch, and aerodynamics. The Torque & RPM method is more accurate. Because the ET and trap-speed methods use different variables, their results often differ slightly — averaging the two gives a good ballpark.
What is the difference between torque and horsepower?
Torque is the twisting force an engine produces, while horsepower is the rate at which that force does work over time. Horsepower factors in RPM, so an engine can make high torque yet modest horsepower at low RPM, or the reverse at high RPM. The Torque & RPM method combines both into a single power figure.
What is the difference between HP, kW, and PS?
HP (Horsepower) is the imperial standard used mainly in the US and UK. kW (Kilowatts) is the SI unit used internationally. PS (Pferdestärke, or Metric Horsepower) is common in Europe and Japan. Roughly, 1 HP equals about 0.746 kW or 1.014 PS, and the unit toggle converts between all three.
Should I include driver weight for the ET and trap-speed methods?
Yes. Use total vehicle weight including the driver, passengers, and any cargo, because that is the mass the engine actually has to move down the strip. Leaving out the driver weight makes the estimate read low.
