Dimensional weight, also called volumetric or DIM weight, is a pricing figure carriers use for packages that are large but light. Instead of charging by actual weight alone, the carrier converts the box's volume into a weight equivalent and bills whichever value is higher.
How do I calculate dimensional weight?

What is the DIM factor (divisor)?
The DIM factor (or divisor) converts a package's volume into a weight. A smaller factor produces a higher dimensional weight. FedEx, UPS, and DHL use 5000 for centimeters or 139 for inches, while USPS uses a larger 6000 / 166. Use the Custom option for any other carrier.
DIM weight vs actual weight — which is billed?
Carriers bill the billable weight, which is the greater of the dimensional weight and the actual weight. If a box weighs 3 kg but its DIM weight is 5 kg, you pay for 5 kg. Enter the actual weight here and the calculator highlights the billable figure for you.
Why is my dimensional weight higher than the actual weight?
This happens with large, light shipments such as pillows, foam, or boxes with a lot of empty space. They take up room on trucks and aircraft, so carriers charge by volume. To lower the DIM weight, use the smallest safe box and remove void space.
How do I calculate volumetric weight for air freight?
Air freight typically uses a 6000 divisor in centimeters (1 cubic meter ≈ 167 kg). Switch to cm, then choose Custom and enter 6000 (or any divisor your forwarder specifies) to get the air-freight volumetric weight for each package.
