What is chargeable weight?
Chargeable weight is the weight a carrier actually bills you for: the greater of a shipment's actual (gross) weight and its volumetric (dimensional) weight. This way a large but light package pays for the cargo space it occupies, while a small dense package pays for its real weight.
What is the chargeable weight formula?
First find the volumetric weight: (Length × Width × Height) ÷ DIM factor. Then the chargeable weight is max(actual weight, volumetric weight) — whichever is larger. For air freight the DIM factor is often 5,000 (IATA) or 6,000, so a box measured in centimetres divided by that divisor gives the volumetric weight in kilograms.
How do I calculate chargeable weight for air freight?
Select the Air Freight (IATA) preset for a ÷ 5,000 divisor or Air Freight (General) for ÷ 6,000, enter your package dimensions in centimetres and the actual weight in kilograms, and the calculator returns the chargeable weight in kg. For parcel carriers like FedEx, UPS, or DHL in imperial units, the divisor 139 is applied automatically.
What is a DIM factor and which one should I use?
The DIM (dimensional) factor is the divisor that converts cubic dimensions into a weight equivalent. Use the figure specified by your carrier or freight forwarder. If you are unsure, pick the preset closest to your shipping mode: air freight commonly uses 5,000 or 6,000, sea freight uses 1,000, and road freight typically uses 3,000.
Why is my chargeable weight higher than the actual weight?
Because the volumetric weight exceeds the actual weight. Bulky but light items — foam, pillows, empty containers — take up cargo space out of proportion to what they weigh, so the carrier bills the volumetric figure instead. To lower it, use snugger packaging, cut empty space, consolidate items, or choose a mode with a more favourable DIM factor.
Why do FedEx and UPS use 139 in imperial units?
When dimensions are in inches and weight is in pounds, the metric divisor of 5,000 converts to roughly 139. That is the standard imperial DIM divisor used by major parcel carriers such as FedEx, UPS, and DHL, and this calculator switches to it for you when you select imperial units.
