Frequently Asked Questions
How is my zodiac animal determined?
Your zodiac animal is based on the formula (birth year - 4) mod 12, which maps to one of the 12 animals in the cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
What is the difference between yearly element and fixed element?
Each animal has a fixed element that never changes (e.g., Rat is always Water, Tiger is always Wood). The yearly element rotates through the five elements every 10 years, adding variety — so a 1990 Horse (Metal) has different traits from a 2002 Horse (Water).
What do the compatibility levels mean?
Compatibility is based on traditional Chinese zodiac relationships:
Does the Chinese zodiac follow January 1st for the new year?
Traditionally, the Chinese zodiac follows the Lunar New Year (late January to mid-February). This tool uses the solar calendar year for simplicity. If you were born in January or February, you may want to check both the current and previous year to find your accurate sign.
What does Yin and Yang mean in the zodiac?
Even-numbered years are Yang (active, outgoing energy) and odd-numbered years are Yin (receptive, introspective energy). This polarity adds another dimension to your zodiac personality.
Even Years
- Active energy
- Outgoing nature
- Assertive traits
- External focus
Odd Years
- Receptive energy
- Introspective nature
- Reflective traits
- Internal focus
