How do I turn a density of 12 deer per km² into deer per square mile?
Multiply by 2.589988, which gives 31.1 deer per square mile. The instinct to reach for 0.386 here is strong and wrong: a square mile is the bigger box, so it contains more animals, not fewer. A quick check is to convert area and count separately — 12 animals in 1 km² is 12 animals in 0.386102 mi², and 12 ÷ 0.386102 gives the same 31.1. The identical flip applies to nests per km², pellet counts per km² and biomass in kg per km².
How many wolves would a 500 mi² management unit realistically hold?
Convert first: 500 mi² is 1 295 km². Set against a territory of roughly 600 km² that is about two packs, so on the order of 16 to 18 animals if packs are averaging eight. Stated as a density that sits near 1.3 wolves per 100 km², or about 3.4 per 100 mi². Territory size tracks prey biomass closely, so a unit with abundant elk can hold packs at half that area and roughly double the headcount, while a lean unit does the reverse.
Why are global protection targets always quoted in square kilometers?
