Your Field Book Is in Acres, the Label Rate Is per Hectare
Field records in the US, the UK and much of Australia are kept in acres, but the numbers that decide what goes on those fields increasingly are not. Seed treatment labels, agrochemical rates from European manufacturers, variety trial results, agronomy platforms and almost every research paper quote everything per hectare. Before a rate can be checked against a label or a benchmark, the block area has to move across.

The order that works in practice: convert the area first, then apply the per-hectare rate, then work out how much product to buy.
Enter the block size in acres
Type the acreage from the field book — 37.5, 118, 240 — into the left field and the hectare figure appears as you type. Part-acre values are fine, and a comma instead of a dot as the decimal mark is accepted.
Multiply the label rate by the hectare figure
A 48.56 ha block at 150 kg N/ha needs 7,284 kg of nitrogen; at 2 L/ha of a herbicide it needs 97.1 litres. Convert the area once and every product on the plan uses the same number.
Copy the figure straight into the plan
The copy button lifts the bare number with no unit attached, so it drops cleanly into a nutrient-plan spreadsheet or a field record. Ctrl + C inside a field does the same.
Turn a metric trial area back into acres
When a trial reports 40 ha of a treatment and you need it in your own units, press the swap button (↔) to run hectares first — 40 ha comes back as 98.84 acres.

Read down the last two columns and the pattern is consistent: a pound per acre becomes 1.1209 kg per hectare, and a seed count or a tonnage per acre becomes 2.4711 times as much per hectare. Nothing about the crop changes — only the size of the box the rate is quoted over.

Questions from the Cropping Plan
My soil test says 180 lb N per acre — what goes into a kg/ha plan?
201.75 kg N/ha. One pound per acre is 1.1209 kg per hectare, because a pound is 0.4536 kg and an acre is 0.4047 ha. A rough field check is to add about 12 per cent to the lb/ac number. Going the other way, a 250 kg/ha recommendation is 223 lb/ac.
How do I put a bushels-per-acre yield next to a tonnes-per-hectare benchmark?
Convert the bushel to kilograms first, since bushel weight is crop-specific: maize is 56 lb (25.40 kg), wheat and soybean 60 lb (27.22 kg). Then divide by 0.4047 to reach per hectare. So 180 bu/ac of maize is 11.30 t/ha, and 60 bu/ac of wheat is 4.04 t/ha against a world average near 3.4 t/ha.
Is a hectare just a round-number acre?
No. A hectare is a metric square, 100 m by 100 m, which is 10,000 m². The acre is a survey unit of 4,840 square yards, historically about a day's ploughing behind one ox team. They land close enough to be confused — 1 ha is 2.4711 ac — but neither is a round multiple of the other.
Why do agrochemical and seed-treatment labels use hectares even on US farms?
The active-ingredient dossier behind the product is registered in grams of active per hectare, and manufacturers keep one metric master label for every market. Where a US label carries fluid ounces per acre, that figure is usually the metric rate converted back — 2.34 L/ha reads as 32 fl oz/ac. When both appear, follow whichever the registration in your country lists.
Which area do I use when a block is part cropped and part margin?
Order product against the treated area, not the title area. If a 120-acre block (48.56 ha) carries 6 acres of grass margin and a track, the sprayed area is 114 acres, or 46.13 ha — a gap of 2.43 ha, which at 2 L/ha is nearly five litres of product. Convert the cropped figure and keep the gross figure for rent and area-payment paperwork.
