Volts to Kilovolts

Turn a raw volt figure from a datasheet, hipot report or ignition spec into readable kilovolts: 30000 V shows as 30 kV. Type in either field to work back the other way.

Turning Raw Volt Figures into Readable Kilovolts

A hipot report prints 1250, an ignition spec quotes 30000, and the probe in your hand is stamped 2.5 kV. Converting volts to kilovolts is how you get all three onto the same scale, and it is nothing more than shifting the decimal point three places to the left.

That shift is where mistakes happen. Inside equipment, a factor of a thousand separates "the insulation is fine" from "the insulation flashed over", so a misread report line is not a rounding error — it is a different test entirely.

Conversion factor: 1 kV = 1000 V, so kV = V ÷ 1000. A coil output of 28000 V is 28 kV; a 1250 V withstand level is 1.25 kV.

Where the Two Notations Collide

Ignition and combustion

Coil datasheets talk in volts, oscilloscope firing-line traces are read in kV. Same spark, two notations.

Insulation and hipot

Safety standards list withstand levels in volts; the tester's dial and its printout are usually marked in kV.

ESD and immunity

Contact-discharge levels are quoted as 4 kV or 8 kV, while measured body voltages are logged as plain volts.

Converting a Datasheet or Test-Bench Reading

The workflow below assumes you have a figure in front of you — on a spec sheet, a tester display or a scope cursor — and you want it in the form the rest of the document uses.

Type the figure as printed

Put the volt value into the left field. Comma or dot both work as the decimal mark and spaces are ignored, so 1,25 and 30 000 parse correctly.

Going back by hand is just as simple: multiply kilovolts by 1000. A 2.5 kV probe rating is 2500 V; a 4 kV ESD contact-discharge level is 4000 V.

Read before you probe: CRT anodes, microwave capacitors and neon transformers hold or deliver kilovolts long after the mains plug is out. Convert the number first, then treat the equipment as if it is still at that level.

High-Voltage Equipment Questions

What voltage arcs across a 1 mm air gap?

Around 3000 V, i.e. 3 kV, for a 1 mm gap between smooth electrodes in dry air at sea level — the source of the familiar "3 kV per mm" rule. Treat it as a guide only: sharp edges concentrate the field and can strike at a fraction of that, humidity and altitude shift it, and below roughly 0.1 mm the Paschen curve turns back upward from a minimum of a few hundred volts. Real clearance design uses standards tables.

What hipot voltage is a 230 V device tested at?

The product standard decides, and the numbers land close together. A household appliance under IEC 60335-1 takes 1250 V AC (1.25 kV) on basic insulation and 3000 V AC (3 kV) on reinforced, for rated voltages up to 250 V. Lab gear under IEC 61010-1 and equipment under IEC 62368-1 typically sit at 1500 V (1.5 kV) basic. The old 2U + 1000 V formula — 1460 V for a 230 V product — comes from the withdrawn IEC 60950-1; benches still quote it, but current standards use fixed tables.

Why is a 15000 V static shock from carpet not lethal?

Because voltage says nothing about energy. Your body behaves roughly like the 100 pF capacitor of the ESD human-body model, so at 15 kV it holds about 11 millijoules, dumped in under a microsecond through roughly 1.5 kΩ. That stings, and it will kill a MOSFET gate, but it is nowhere near the sustained current through the chest that electrocutes. A 230 V mains fault is the opposite: a fraction of the voltage, pushed continuously.

What does a kV rating on insulation or a probe mean?

Check which kind of kV it is before you trust it. A working rating is what the part may see continuously. A test or peak rating is a short withstand level — 60 seconds as a type test, a second or two in production. An impulse rating describes a microsecond surge waveform. Insulation rated for a 3 kV test voltage is not a 3 kV working part, and a probe marked 2.5 kV CAT II is not cleared for 2.5 kV of impulse.

Why do spec sheets mix volts and kilovolts in one document?

Each figure keeps the unit of the discipline it came from. Safety tables are copied verbatim from the standard and stay in volts; instrument displays, insulation catalogues and ignition scopes use kV because their numbers run to five digits. One power-supply datasheet can list a 230 V input, a 1500 V isolation test and a 6 kV surge rating on the same page. Convert everything to one unit before comparing, and a "1.5" beside a "1500" stops looking like a contradiction.
