Lighting is measured in lux (lumens per square meter), and the right level depends on the task: kitchens and offices want bright task light around 400 lux, living and dining rooms sit at 200–250 lux, while hallways and bedrooms need only 100–150 lux.

Under the hood it uses a simple model: total lumens = room area × target lux × ceiling-height factor, then divides by the lumens your chosen bulb puts out. Taller ceilings need more lumens because light spreads over a greater distance before it reaches the floor.

How many lumens do I need for a room?

Multiply the room area by the recommended lux for that room type, then by the ceiling-height factor. For example, a 4 × 5 m living room (20 m²) at 200 lux with a standard ceiling needs about 4,000 lumens. The calculator does this for you and converts it straight into a bulb count.

How do I calculate the number of lights for a room?

Take the total lumens the room needs and divide by the lumen output of one bulb, then round up. Enter your room and pick a bulb wattage, and the Bulbs Needed figure is calculated instantly — the breakdown shows the lumens per bulb used.

What lux level is recommended for each room?

As a guide: hallways around 100 lux, bedrooms 150 lux, living rooms and nurseries 200 lux, dining rooms, garages, and laundry around 250 lux, closets 300 lux, kitchens, bathrooms, and offices 400 lux, and workshops 500 lux. Each preset in the calculator applies its level automatically, and the brightness slider lets you fine-tune it.

Why does ceiling height affect the number of bulbs?

Light intensity falls off with distance, so a fixture mounted at 4 m delivers less light to the floor than the same fixture at 2.5 m. The calculator treats 2.5 m as the baseline (factor ×1.0) and raises the factor for taller rooms — up to ×2.0 above 5 m — so enough light still reaches your surfaces.

Which bulb type should I choose?

LED suits most rooms: it uses far less energy than incandescent, lasts around 25,000 hours, and runs cool. CFL is a mid-range option but contains a little mercury. Incandescent and halogen are less efficient, though some people prefer their warm glow. Use the Energy Comparison to see the yearly kWh difference for your exact room.

What does the brightness slider do?

It scales the target lux relative to the room's recommendation. At 100% you get the standard level; 50% halves it for ambient or accent lighting; 150% adds half again for task-heavy spaces or anyone who simply prefers brighter rooms.

It estimates yearly electricity use assuming 8 hours of daily use across 365 days. Real consumption varies with your habits, dimmer settings, and bulb efficiency, so treat the figures as a way to compare bulb technologies rather than an exact bill.

Can I use this for commercial spaces?

The presets cover common residential rooms. Commercial spaces like retail floors and warehouses often follow specific lighting codes that go beyond this tool, but the office preset is a reasonable starting point for a small office.
