Setting a Gigajoule Gas Bill Beside a Kilowatt-hour Power Bill

In most of Canada, and for district heat in parts of Europe, the gas statement is denominated in gigajoules while the electricity statement counts kilowatt-hours. Two envelopes arrive in the same week describing the same house, in units that refuse to sit next to each other. Putting the GJ figure onto the kWh scale is the first honest step towards seeing where a household's energy actually goes.

Conversion factor: 1 GJ = 277.777778 kWh, because a gigajoule is 1 000 000 000 joules and a kilowatt-hour is 3 600 000 of them. A 9 GJ statement is therefore 2 500 kWh of raw gas energy, and a 100 GJ year works out at 27 778 kWh.

What Sits Behind the Number on the Statement

A Cubic Metre Is Worth About 10 kWh

The meter outside counts volume in cubic metres; the utility multiplies it by a heating value near 37.5 MJ/m³. That makes one m³ about 0.0375 GJ, or 10.42 kWh of chemical energy delivered to the burner.

Gigajoules Are How Canada Bills Gas

Canadian utilities moved to GJ years ago, and several European heat networks price district heat the same way. Elsewhere the identical energy appears as therms, CCF or kWh, which is why a cross-border comparison means nothing until it is converted.

Face-Value Totals Are Not Comparable

A converted kWh figure measures energy bought, not warmth received. A furnace vents part of every gigajoule up the flue, while a kilowatt-hour arrives ready to use, so the two statements answer slightly different questions.

Take the GJ figure straight off the gas bill

Look for the consumption line rather than the dollar total — on most Canadian statements it reads something like “14.372 GJ” for the billing period. Decimals are normal here, and the field accepts a dot or a comma as the decimal mark.

Read the kWh beside it and compare like for like

The second field fills in while you type, so the gas month lands on the same scale as the electricity month. Match the billing periods before you draw any conclusion — a gas winter against an electric summer proves nothing.

Add twelve statements before quoting a figure

One month says almost nothing in a climate where January and July differ by a factor of five. Total a full year of gigajoules first, convert once, and the resulting number is the one worth repeating.

Swap when the comparison starts on the electric side

The annual rows are the ones that reframe a household. A 100 GJ year is 27,778 kWh of gas energy, which dwarfs the 8,000–12,000 kWh of electricity the same home usually buys: heating, not appliances, is where the energy goes. The July row is just as instructive — 2 GJ with the furnace idle is water heating, cooking and standing losses, and that flat baseline is exactly what you subtract when you want the heating portion on its own.

What would one gigajoule of gas cost me as electricity instead?

Take the 277.78 kWh and price it with your own tariff. At 10 ¢/kWh that much energy costs about $27.78; at 13 ¢ it is $36.11, and at 16 ¢ it reaches $44.44. Set those against the all-in cost of a gigajoule on the gas side — commodity plus delivery plus carbon charges, commonly somewhere in the low-to-mid teens per GJ across Canada — and the persistence of gas heating stops being mysterious. The comparison is only fair once you remember the furnace discards part of every gigajoule while an electric heater keeps all of the kilowatt-hour, and that a heat pump shifts the arithmetic again.

How do the cubic metres on my meter turn into gigajoules on the statement?

The dial records volume, so the utility multiplies your m³ by the measured heating value of the gas flowing in your area — typically 37–38 MJ/m³, shown on the bill as an energy or conversion factor. At 37.5 MJ/m³, 400 m³ becomes 15 GJ, which this page turns into 4,167 kWh. A pressure and temperature correction is usually applied as well, since a cubic metre of cold gas at elevation holds fewer molecules than one at sea level, and the factor drifts slightly from month to month as the composition of the supply changes.

Why does a January gigajoule figure run five times a July one?

Because nearly everything above the summer baseline is space heating, and space heating follows heating degree days rather than habits. July's 2 GJ covers hot water, cooking and standing losses; January adds a furnace running much of the day against a 40 °C difference between indoors and outdoors, taking the month to 18 GJ. On the kilowatt-hour scale that is 556 against 5,000 — a swing no electricity bill in the same house will ever show, because lighting and appliances barely notice the weather.

What is a whole year of household gas worth in kilowatt-hours?

A typical Canadian detached home burns roughly 80–120 GJ a year, which converts to about 22,200–33,300 kWh. Beside the 8,000–12,000 kWh of electricity a similar home buys, the gas side is usually two to three times larger in raw energy. Well-insulated newer builds land nearer 65 GJ, or 18,056 kWh, while a large uninsulated house can pass 130 GJ, which is 36,111 kWh. Knowing which end of that range you occupy matters far more than any single month's reading.

Can I add my gas GJ and my electricity kWh into one household total?

For a footprint or benchmarking exercise, yes — convert the gigajoules, add the meter reading, report one figure. What you must not do is treat the two halves as equally useful. A mid-efficiency furnace turns roughly 80% of its gas energy into room heat and a condensing one about 95%, whereas resistance heating delivers essentially all of its kilowatt-hour and a heat pump delivers several times more warmth than the electricity it draws. Sum the energy for reporting, then apply each side's efficiency before the total drives any decision.
