Take the GJ figure straight off the gas bill
Look for the consumption line rather than the dollar total — on most Canadian statements it reads something like “14.372 GJ” for the billing period. Decimals are normal here, and the field accepts a dot or a comma as the decimal mark.
Read the kWh beside it and compare like for like
The second field fills in while you type, so the gas month lands on the same scale as the electricity month. Match the billing periods before you draw any conclusion — a gas winter against an electric summer proves nothing.

The annual rows are the ones that reframe a household. A 100 GJ year is 27,778 kWh of gas energy, which dwarfs the 8,000–12,000 kWh of electricity the same home usually buys: heating, not appliances, is where the energy goes. How do the cubic metres on my meter turn into gigajoules on the statement?
