What Is Background Remover?
Background Remover is an AI-powered tool that automatically detects and removes backgrounds from your images — entirely within your browser. No uploads, no servers, no waiting in queues.
Whether you need product photos with clean transparent backgrounds, profile pictures without distracting scenery, or creative compositions with custom backdrops, this tool handles it in seconds.
How It Works
The tool uses the RMBG-1.4 AI model to analyze your image and separate the foreground subject from the background. The model runs directly in your browser using WebAssembly, so your images never leave your device.
After automatic removal, you can fine-tune the result using manual brush tools — erase leftover edges or restore parts the AI accidentally removed.

How to Use Background Remover
Upload Your Image
Get started by uploading an image in one of three ways:
- Click the upload area to browse and select a file
- Drag and drop an image directly onto the upload zone
- Paste an image from your clipboard using Ctrl+V (or Cmd+V on Mac)
The tool accepts all common image formats including JPG, PNG, WebP, and more.
Automatic Background Removal
Once uploaded, the AI model automatically processes your image. On first use, the model needs to download (about 170MB) — this only happens once and is cached for future use. After that, processing takes just a few seconds.
Refine the Result
Use the editing tools to perfect the output:
Move
Erase
Restore
Adjust the brush size slider for precise control. Use Undo to revert any changes (up to 20 steps).
Choose a Background
Select what appears behind your subject:
- Transparent — Keep a transparent background (best for PNG export)
- Solid Color — Pick from presets or use the color picker for any custom color
- Image — Upload another image to use as the background
Export
Choose your preferred format (PNG, JPEG, or WebP), adjust quality if needed, and click Download. Your processed image is ready to use.
Features
AI-Powered Background Removal
Uses the RMBG-1.4 model to automatically detect and separate foreground subjects from backgrounds. Works well with people, products, animals, and objects against various backgrounds.
Manual Refinement Tools
Three editing tools give you full control over the result:
- Move Tool — Freely reposition the foreground subject anywhere on the canvas by clicking and dragging
- Erase Brush — Remove remaining background edges or unwanted foreground areas with an adjustable-size brush
- Restore Brush — Recover parts that were accidentally removed by the AI or the erase tool
Flexible Background Options
Choose from three background types to match your needs:
- Transparent — Perfect for overlays, logos, and product images
- Solid Color — Pick from 8 presets or use the color picker for any custom color
- Custom Image — Upload your own background image for creative compositions
Multiple Export Formats
Export your result in the format that works best for your use case:
- PNG — Supports transparency, ideal for web and design
- JPEG — Smaller file size, auto-fills transparent areas with white
- WebP — Modern format with excellent compression and quality
Adjust quality (10-100%) for JPEG and WebP exports to balance file size and image quality.
Undo Support
Made a mistake? Undo up to 20 steps of edits including moves, erases, and restores.
Browser-Based Processing
Everything runs locally in your browser. No images are uploaded to any server, ensuring complete privacy. The AI model is downloaded once and cached for instant future use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. All processing happens entirely in your browser. Your images never leave your device. The AI model runs locally using WebAssembly technology.
Why does the first use take longer?
On first use, the AI model (approximately 170MB) needs to be downloaded to your browser. This is a one-time download — the model is cached and loads instantly on subsequent visits.
What image formats are supported?
You can upload any common image format including JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, and TIFF. The tool exports in PNG (with transparency), JPEG, or WebP.
The AI missed some background areas. How do I fix it?
Use the Erase tool to manually remove any remaining background. Adjust the brush size for precision, and zoom in on detailed areas for better control.
The AI removed part of my subject. How do I restore it?
Switch to the Restore tool and paint over the areas you want to bring back. The original image data is preserved, so you can restore any accidentally removed section.
Which export format should I use?
PNG is best when you need transparency (for websites, presentations, or design software). JPEG is ideal for smaller file sizes when transparency is not needed. WebP offers the best of both — smaller files with transparency support.
Is there a file size or resolution limit?
There is no hard limit, but very large images (above 4000px) may take longer to process depending on your device's capabilities. For best performance, images under 3000px on the longest side are recommended.
Can I use the results commercially?
Yes. The processed images are yours to use however you like — for personal projects, social media, e-commerce listings, or any other purpose.
