How many BTU do I need per square foot?

As a baseline, this calculator uses about 20 BTU per square foot, then adjusts that figure for room type, sun exposure, ceiling height, windows, occupants, floor level, and insulation. A plain per-square-foot rule is a fine starting point, but those factors can move the requirement up or down noticeably.

What is BTU and why does it matter?

BTU (British Thermal Unit) is the standard measure of cooling capacity — one BTU is the energy needed to change the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. For an air conditioner, more BTU means more cooling power. Matching BTU to your room ensures it cools effectively without wasting energy.

How do I convert BTU to Ton or HP?

These are just different ways to state cooling capacity: 1 Ton of cooling equals 12,000 BTU/h, and 1 HP (horsepower) is roughly 9,000 BTU/h. You do not have to convert by hand — the calculator displays each recommended size in BTU, HP, and Ton so it matches the labels on AC products in your market.

What happens if my AC is too big or too small?

An undersized AC runs constantly trying to reach the set temperature, driving up bills and wearing out the unit while still failing to cool on hot days. A significantly oversized AC cycles on and off too quickly, which wastes energy, causes temperature swings, and fails to dehumidify properly. A slight oversize of about 10–20% is fine and gives a useful comfort margin.

Do ceiling height and sun exposure change the BTU needed?

Yes. A higher ceiling means more air volume to cool, so the requirement scales up against the 2.4 m standard, and a sunny, west-facing room adds roughly 15% over a shaded one. It gives a general estimate based on standard HVAC guidelines. If you live somewhere extremely hot or humid, consider adding 10–15% to the recommended BTU. For precise sizing in extreme conditions or unusual buildings, consult a local HVAC professional.
