Reading a Metric Torque Spec With an Imperial Wrench
Almost every carmaker on the planet writes its fastener specifications in Newton-meters, including the ones building cars in Michigan and Kentucky. Most torque wrenches hanging in an American toolbox are still marked in pound-feet. That gap is where this page lives: the service manual says 103 N·m for the wheel nuts, your wrench has no N·m scale, and the car is already on the jack stands.

Put the metric spec straight into the N·m field — 103, or 110,5 if your manual uses a comma decimal, because both separators are accepted. The pound-foot field fills in the instant you stop typing; there is no convert button to press with a greasy glove.
Convert every stage before you start
For a staged head-bolt procedure, run each numeric pass through one at a time and write the pound-foot results on a scrap of card taped to the fender. Converting mid-sequence, with the gasket already crushed, is how a stage gets skipped.

Torque Questions From the Service Bay
My wrench says lb-ft but the chart says ft-lbs — are those different?
They are the same quantity written two ways. Strict usage puts the force first and the distance second, giving pound-foot (lb-ft) for torque and reserving foot-pound for energy, but American shop literature has used "ft-lbs" for torque for a century and nobody misreads it. The symbol on this page, ft·lbf, spells out that the pound involved is a pound of force.
Why does the head-bolt procedure switch from Newton-meters to degrees?
Because torque-to-yield bolts are deliberately stretched past their elastic limit, and past that point the torque reading stops tracking clamp load usefully. The metric snug stage gets the joint seated, then a measured angle — 90°, sometimes twice — stretches the bolt a controlled amount. Degrees are already unit-free, so only the numeric stages need converting.
Does the tightening pattern matter once I have the right number?
Very much. Wheel nuts go up in a star pattern so the rim pulls flat against the hub; head bolts spiral out from the centre. Pulling one fastener to full torque before its neighbours cocks the part and leaves the correctly torqued bolts carrying uneven load, which no amount of conversion accuracy fixes.
Should I re-check wheel nuts after driving?
Most manufacturers ask for a re-check after roughly 50 to 100 miles, and alloy wheels in particular bed in slightly as the mating faces seat. Re-checking means setting the wrench to the same converted figure and confirming it clicks without further movement, not adding another quarter turn for luck.
Can I just use the impact gun and skip the conversion?
An impact gun is a removal and run-down tool. Its delivered torque swings with air pressure, battery charge, socket mass and how long you hold the trigger, and torque sticks only cap the peak roughly. Run the nuts down with the gun if you like, then finish with a calibrated wrench set to the converted pound-foot value.
