Once a value drops past minus a hundred, the Celsius number becomes an awkward negative that is easy to mistype, and every equation you might feed it into wants the absolute figure anyway. Low-Temperature Conversion Questions

Why does kelvin have no degree symbol?

Because it is an SI base unit in its own right, not a graduation of something else. The correct form is 77.36 K, written with a space and no degree sign, and the unit name is lower case even though the symbol is a capital.

The result came out negative — what went wrong?

A negative kelvin figure means the Celsius input was below -273.15, which is colder than absolute zero and therefore not a real temperature. In practice it is almost always a typo — an extra digit, or a minus sign carried over from a previous entry.

Why does 77 K appear so often in superconductivity work?

That is where liquid nitrogen boils, and nitrogen is cheap and easy to handle. A material with a critical temperature above 77.36 K can be cooled in a nitrogen bath instead of a helium cryostat, which changes the cost of an experiment by orders of magnitude.

Is a kelvin the same size as a Celsius degree?

Yes, exactly. Only the zero point moves, which is why the conversion is a pure addition. It also means a temperature difference is identical in both: a 5°C rise is a 5 K rise, and gradients quoted per kelvin can be used with Celsius data unchanged.

Where does the 0.15 in 273.15 come from?

It ties the two scales to the triple point of water, which sits at 273.16 K and 0.01°C. Fixing that single point forces the ice point onto 273.15 K, so the offset is a defined constant rather than a rounded measurement.
