Seed Spacing Calculator

Seed Spacing Calculator

Work out plant spacing, row count, and total seeds needed for your garden bed, with a visual layout preview.

Plant Spacing Calculator for Any Garden Bed

The plant spacing calculator works out exactly how many plants fit in your bed and how many seeds to buy, based on recommended spacing for each crop. Pick a plant, enter your bed size, and choose a planting pattern to get instant numbers and a visual layout.

It handles the math behind the spacing for you: total plants, number of rows, plants per row, and the seeds you need once germination is factored in. Switch between rows, square, and staggered patterns to see how each one changes the count for the same bed.

Private by design: every calculation runs in your browser. Your plant choice, bed dimensions, and results are never uploaded to any server.

Who Is This Tool For?

Home gardeners

Plan raised beds and backyard plots without guessing how many seedlings to start.

Urban growers

Squeeze the most plants out of limited space with square or staggered spacing.

Community garden organizers

Allocate bed space fairly and estimate the seed budget for each plot.

Beginners

Get research-backed spacing auto-filled so plants are never crowded or too far apart.

How to Use the Calculator

1

Select a plant

Open the plant picker to browse the built-in plants by category — Vegetables, Herbs, and Flowers. Type in the search box to jump to a specific plant. Selecting one auto-fills its recommended plant spacing, row spacing, sowing depth, seeds per hole, and germination rate. If your plant isn't listed, choose Custom Spacing and enter the values yourself.

2

Enter bed dimensions

Type the length and width of your garden bed. Use the unit toggle to work in centimeters, meters, or feet — every field converts automatically when you switch.

3

Choose a planting pattern

Pick Rows for traditional rows with separate plant and row spacing, Square for equal spacing in all directions, or Staggered to offset alternate rows and fit more plants in the same area.

4

Read your results

See total plants, total seeds needed, the number of rows, and plants per row. The visual layout draws a scaled grid showing where each plant sits, and it updates the moment you change any input.

Features

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how many plants fit in a given area?

Enter your bed length and width, then pick a plant or set custom spacing. The calculator divides the bed by the plant and row spacing to find plants per row and the number of rows, then multiplies them for the total. For a 200 cm × 100 cm bed with 25 cm spacing in rows, that's roughly 9 plants per row across 5 rows, or about 45 plants.

What's the difference between square and staggered (triangular) spacing?

Square spacing places plants on an even grid with equal distance in every direction. Staggered spacing offsets every other row by half the plant spacing, creating a triangular packing that fits more plants in the same bed while keeping the same minimum distance between neighbors — typically around 15% more.

How is the total seeds number calculated?

Total Seeds = ceil(Total Plants × Seeds per Hole ÷ Germination Rate). The germination rate accounts for seeds that won't sprout. With 100 planting positions, 2 seeds per hole, and an 80% germination rate: ceil(100 × 2 ÷ 0.80) = 250 seeds.

Is seed spacing the same as plant spacing?

They're related but not identical. Plant spacing is the distance between the final, established plants. When you sow seed directly, you often place seeds closer and thin to the recommended plant spacing later. This tool uses plant spacing for the layout and adds the seeds per hole and germination rate to estimate how much seed to buy.

What if my plant isn't in the list?

Choose Custom Spacing in the plant picker and enter the plant spacing, row spacing, sowing depth, and seeds per hole yourself. Check your seed packet or a local extension service for recommended values.

Why do the numbers change when I switch units?

All internal calculations are done in centimeters. When you switch to meters or feet, the input values are converted to the new unit, which can introduce small rounding differences. These don't affect the accuracy of the plant and seed totals.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. Every calculation happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and no results are saved unless you note them down or take a screenshot yourself.
