Square Footage Calculator

Square Footage Calculator

Calculate area in square feet for any room or space. Supports 8 shapes, multi-zone areas, unit conversion, and cost estimation.

Square Footage Calculator for Rooms and Spaces

The square footage calculator measures the area of any room, floor, or lot and shows the result in square feet along with other common units. Whether you are planning a renovation, ordering flooring, or estimating construction costs, you get accurate area in seconds without doing the math by hand.

It supports 8 shapes, lets you combine or subtract multiple zones for irregular floor plans, converts between five input units, and can even estimate material costs from a price per square foot or square meter. Quick presets fill in standard room sizes so you can start instantly.

Private by design: every calculation runs entirely in your browser. Your measurements, prices, and zones are never uploaded to a server or tracked.

How to Calculate Square Footage

1

Pick a shape

Choose the shape that matches your space — Rectangle is selected by default and fits most rooms. Switch to Square, Circle, Triangle, Trapezoid, Ellipse, Semicircle, or L-Shape as needed.

2

Choose a unit and enter dimensions

Set the unit to Feet, Meters, Centimeters, Inches, or Yards, then type the measurements into the input fields. The area updates automatically as you type — no calculate button needed.

3

Add zones for complex spaces

For multi-section or irregular areas, click Add Area to save the current shape as a zone, then enter the next one. Toggle any zone to Subtract to remove cutouts like closets or columns.

4

Estimate cost and read results

Open Cost Estimate, enter a price per square foot or square meter, and choose a currency to estimate material cost. The result shows the formula breakdown, conversions to other units, and a real-world size comparison.

Features

8 Shape Types

Calculate area for a Rectangle, Square, Circle, Triangle, Trapezoid, Ellipse, Semicircle, or L-Shape to match almost any space.

Multi-Zone Calculation

Add multiple zones to combine areas, or toggle a zone to subtract mode to exclude cutouts. The running total updates automatically.

Flexible Input Units

Enter dimensions in feet, meters, centimeters, inches, or yards — the tool converts everything internally for you.

Area Unit Conversions

See every result in square feet, square meters, square yards, square inches, acres, and hectares at once.

Interactive Shape Preview

A labeled SVG diagram shows which side each measurement refers to, so you enter values in the right fields.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the square footage of a room?

Select Rectangle, set the unit to Feet, then enter the room's length and width. The area in square feet is calculated automatically. If you measured in meters, choose Meters as the unit — the result still appears in square feet along with conversions to other units.

How do you find square footage from length and width?

Square footage of a rectangle is simply length multiplied by width. Enter both values and the calculator multiplies them for you, then shows the formula breakdown (for example, 12 ft × 14 ft = 168 sq ft) so the math is clear.

How do I calculate square footage for an L-shaped or irregular room?

You have two options. Use the L-Shape type to enter both rectangular sections at once, or use Multi-Zone by adding each section as a separate zone with Add Area. Both methods give the same total, and you can subtract zones for any cutouts.

Can I subtract areas like closets or columns?

Yes. Add the area you want to exclude as a zone, then click the toggle button on that zone to switch it to Subtract mode. The total automatically deducts that area from the running sum.

How do I convert inches to square feet?

Set the unit to Inches and enter your dimensions in inches. The calculator converts them internally and reports the result in square feet, along with square meters, square yards, square inches, acres, and hectares.

How many square feet is a 12x12 room?

A 12 ft by 12 ft room is 144 square feet (12 × 12). You can get this instantly by clicking the Bedroom preset, which uses 12 × 12 feet, or by typing both values into a Rectangle.

What do the quick presets use for dimensions?

Presets fill in typical room sizes in feet: Bedroom (12×12), Master Bedroom (14×16), Living Room (16×20), Kitchen (12×14), Bathroom (8×10), 1-Car Garage (12×22), and 2-Car Garage (24×22). Selecting a preset switches the tool to Rectangle in feet.

How does the cost estimation work?

Open Cost Estimate, enter a price per square foot or per square meter, and pick a currency. The tool multiplies that price by the total area and formats the result in your chosen currency, updating instantly as the area changes.

Are my measurements kept private?

Yes. All calculations happen locally in your browser. Your dimensions, zones, and prices are never sent to any server, and none of your calculation data is collected or tracked.
