Retro Game Over Screen

Retro Game Over Screen

Create customizable retro arcade Game Over screens with pixel art rendering, 8 classic themes, CRT scanline effects, and high-res PNG export.

Game Over Screen Generator with Retro Pixel Art

This game over screen generator builds customizable arcade-style "Game Over" screens with authentic pixel art rendering. Type your own message, pick a retro theme, add a score, and download a crisp PNG ready for wallpapers, thumbnails, or social posts.

Everything is drawn on a low-resolution canvas and scaled up with no smoothing — the same blocky technique classic 8-bit and 16-bit games used. The result is sharp pixel text that looks like a vintage arcade cabinet, with optional CRT scanlines and vignette for extra authenticity.

Private by design: every frame is rendered in your browser with HTML Canvas. Your text, score, and exported image are never uploaded to a server.

How to Make a Game Over Screen

1

Pick a theme

Click any theme to instantly change the color scheme and background pattern. Choose from Classic Arcade, Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Neon, Retro CRT, 8-bit NES, Sunset, or Ice.

2

Customize the text

Edit the Main Text (default "GAME OVER", up to 20 characters) and the Sub Text that blinks like an arcade prompt (up to 40 characters). Add an optional Score to show a SCORE label and number.

3

Toggle the effects

Turn Scanlines, CRT vignette, and Flicker on or off to dial in your retro intensity. The preview updates in real time on the pixel canvas.

4

Download or go fullscreen

Save your screen as a high-resolution 1280x960 PNG, or open it in Fullscreen to see it at full size. Press Escape to exit fullscreen.

Features

8 Retro Themes

Classic Arcade, Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Neon, Retro CRT, 8-bit NES, Sunset, and Ice — each with its own colors and background pattern.

Auto-Scaling Main Text

Type any message up to 20 characters. The pixel font shrinks automatically so longer text always fits the screen.

Blinking Sub Text

A second line (up to 40 characters) blinks on and off every half second, just like "INSERT COIN" on a real arcade machine.

Optional Score Display

Fill in a score to add a SCORE label and number. Leave it empty to hide the score section entirely.

Scanlines & CRT Vignette

Add horizontal scanlines and darkened edges to mimic the curved glass of an old cathode ray tube monitor.

Screen Flicker

A subtle brightness flicker on the preview adds the final touch of vintage CRT atmosphere.

Live Pixel Preview

Themes, text, score, and effects update the canvas instantly — there is no Generate button to press.

High-Resolution PNG Export

Download at 1280x960 (4x the canvas) with all selected effects applied. The pixel art stays sharp and crisp.

Fullscreen Preview

View your Game Over screen full size on a centered black background, keeping its 4:3 aspect ratio.

Runs Entirely In-Browser

All rendering uses HTML Canvas on your device. Nothing is uploaded, so your designs stay private.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a custom game over screen?

Pick a theme, edit the main and sub text, add an optional score, then toggle the scanlines, CRT, and flicker effects. The preview updates as you go — when it looks right, download it as a PNG. There is nothing to install or sign up for.

Can I download the game over screen as a PNG?

Yes. Click Download PNG and the screen is exported at 1280x960 pixels — four times the canvas resolution — with all selected effects applied. The pixel art stays sharp at this size, so it works well for wallpapers, thumbnails, or social media.

Can I change the score and text?

Yes. Type any main text up to 20 characters (the font auto-scales to fit), set a blinking sub line up to 40 characters, and enter any score. Popular main-text alternatives to "GAME OVER" include "YOU DIED", "MISSION FAILED", "TRY AGAIN", and "LEVEL UP". Leave the score field empty to hide it.

What retro styles are available (NES, arcade, Pac-Man)?

There are eight themes: Classic Arcade (red on black), Space Invaders (green phosphor with starfield), Pac-Man (yellow with dot patterns), Neon (magenta and cyan grid), Retro CRT (green terminal), 8-bit NES (clean white on a NES palette), Sunset (warm orange on purple), and Ice (cool cyan and blue).

Why does the sub text blink?

Blinking text is a signature of classic arcade machines, where prompts like "INSERT COIN" or "PRESS START" flashed to grab the player's attention. The generator recreates this with a 500ms blink interval. The blink is hidden in the exported PNG so the sub text always appears in your download.

What is the CRT vignette effect?

The CRT vignette darkens the edges and corners of the screen, simulating how old cathode ray tube monitors dimmed toward the edges of their curved glass. Combined with scanlines, it creates a convincing retro monitor look.

Can I view it fullscreen?

Yes. Click Fullscreen to display your Game Over screen at full size on a centered black background. It keeps its 4:3 aspect ratio, and you can press Escape to exit.

Why does the image look pixelated?

The pixelation is intentional. The screen is drawn at a low 320x240 resolution and scaled up with no smoothing — exactly how 8-bit and 16-bit consoles displayed graphics. That is what gives it the authentic retro arcade feel.
