Frequently Asked Questions
What is the OpenDyslexic font?
OpenDyslexic is a free, open-source typeface designed to increase readability for readers with dyslexia. The letters have weighted bottoms and unique shapes that help prevent confusion between similar characters like b, d, p, and q.
Reading Aid loads this font automatically when you select it from the font options. The weighted design helps anchor letters to the baseline, making them easier to distinguish and reducing the likelihood of letter reversal.
What is Bionic Reading?
Bionic Reading is a technique that bolds the first few letters of each word. These visual anchor points help your brain recognize the word faster, allowing you to read more quickly while maintaining comprehension.
Toggle it on using the Bionic button in the reading aids section. The bolded portions create fixation points that guide your eyes through the text more efficiently, potentially increasing reading speed by 20-30% for some users.
How does the Reading Ruler work?
The reading ruler places a semi-transparent overlay on the page with a clear horizontal window that highlights one line at a time. You can:
- Drag the ruler up or down with your mouse
- Use the Up and Down arrow keys to move it line by line
- The ruler automatically adjusts to your text size and spacing
This helps readers who tend to lose their place or skip lines, especially those with dyslexia, ADHD, or visual tracking difficulties.
How does Focus Mode work?
Focus Mode dims all paragraphs to low opacity. When you click a paragraph, it becomes fully visible while the rest stay dimmed. This reduces visual clutter and helps you concentrate on one section at a time.
It's particularly useful for:
- Readers who get overwhelmed by large blocks of text
- People with attention difficulties
- Anyone who wants to read one section at a time without distraction
Can I use Auto-scroll for hands-free reading?
Yes. Click the play button to start automatic scrolling. Use the – and + buttons to adjust speed across 5 levels. Auto-scroll stops automatically when you reach the end of the text.
You can also pause at any time by:
- Clicking the pause button
- Scrolling manually with your mouse or trackpad
- Using keyboard navigation
Auto-scroll is ideal for readers with motor difficulties, RSI, or anyone who prefers a relaxed, hands-free reading experience.
What are the High Contrast themes?
Reading Aid includes three high contrast themes designed for users with low vision or who need maximum text clarity:
HC Dark
HC Light
Amber
Are my settings saved?
Yes. Your preferences for font, text size, spacing, and theme are automatically saved in your browser's localStorage and restored the next time you use Reading Aid. No account is needed.
Is my text private?
