Matrix Rain — The Digital Rain Effect in Your Browser
Matrix rain recreates the iconic green falling characters from The Matrix, streaming a hypnotic digital rain straight onto your screen. It starts the moment you open the page — no download, no sign-up, nothing to install.
You control every part of the effect: pick from 7 colors (including a cycling Rainbow), set the speed, density, and font size, choose one of 6 character sets, send the rain in any of 4 directions, and float your own glowing message over the top. It is great as a full-screen screensaver, a relaxing visual to unwind to, or a tech-themed backdrop for a desk or presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Matrix rain (digital rain) effect?
It is the iconic stream of glowing characters cascading down the screen, made famous by The Matrix films. Often called digital rain or matrix code rain, it shows columns of characters falling with a bright head and a fading trail. This tool recreates that effect live in your browser and lets you customize it.
What are the green falling characters in The Matrix?
The original films used mostly Japanese Katakana characters mixed with Latin letters and numbers. This app defaults to Katakana for an authentic look, and you can switch the character set to Latin, Numbers, Binary, a Mix, or your own Custom characters at any time.
How do I make a matrix rain effect online?
Just open the page — the rain starts on its own. Move your cursor to reveal the Settings button, then choose a color, set the speed, density and size, pick a character set and direction, and you have your own custom matrix rain. To use specific characters, choose Custom in the Characters section and type the characters you want.
Can I use it as a screensaver or full-screen wallpaper?
Yes. Put your browser into full screen and leave the page running for a screensaver-style backdrop. Because the animation automatically pauses whenever you switch to another tab, it won't waste resources in the background.
Can I change the color, speed and density?
Yes. The Settings panel offers 7 color options, a Speed slider from Slow to Fast, a Density slider from Sparse to Dense, and a Font Size slider from Small to Large. You can also set the rain direction and turn on Rainbow mode for cycling colors.
What does Interactive mode do?
When you enable Interactive, characters near your cursor disappear, creating a circular void that follows your mouse — or your finger on a touchscreen. Move around to carve dynamic patterns into the rain.
Does it work on phone and in the browser?
Yes. The effect runs entirely in your web browser on desktop and mobile, with touch support for the interactive mode. It uses HTML5 Canvas for efficient rendering and adapts to any screen size, so it stays smooth on most modern devices.
Are my settings saved?
Yes. Your color, speed, density, font size, character set, direction, and custom text are all saved in your browser and restored automatically when you come back. Nothing is uploaded — the data stays on your device, and Reset returns everything to the defaults.
