Flooring Calculator for Any Room
The flooring calculator estimates exactly how much flooring material you need for any room, so you order the right amount without waste or a second trip to the store. Enter your room dimensions and it works out the area, the pieces and boxes to buy, and the project cost.
It handles hardwood, laminate, engineered wood, ceramic and porcelain tile, vinyl plank and tile, and carpet — plus a custom piece size for anything else. Five room shapes, a live preview, exclude-area subtraction, multi-room totals, and skirting and cost estimates make it work for a single room or a whole house.
How to Use the Flooring Calculator
Set up your room
Pick a room shape — Rectangle, L-Shape, U-Shape, T-Shape, or Trapezoid — choose your unit (m, cm, ft, or in), and enter the dimensions. The SVG preview redraws as you type so you can check the layout.
Exclude obstacles
Open Exclude Areas and add the width and height of any columns, built-in cabinets, or kitchen islands. Each one is subtracted from the floor area and shown on the preview.
Choose material and settings
Select a flooring material (sizes are pre-filled), set Pieces per Box to match your product, choose Standard or Diagonal 45° layout, and drag the Waste Factor slider. For tiles, set the gap/spacing.
Read the results
See the net Total Room Area, the Area with Waste you should buy, Pieces Needed, Boxes Needed, and Coverage per Box. Add prices for a material and labour cost estimate, or expand Skirting for trim length.
Features
5 Room Shapes
Calculate Rectangle, L-Shape, U-Shape, T-Shape, and Trapezoid rooms, each with its own dimension fields.
Many Material Types
Hardwood, Laminate, Engineered Wood, Ceramic, Porcelain, Vinyl Plank and Tile, and Carpet — or enter a Custom Size.
Custom Piece Size
Not on the list? Type any plank or tile size in millimetres and the calculator uses it directly.
Flexible Units
Work in metres, centimetres, feet, or inches; values convert on the fly without losing precision.
Adjustable Waste Factor
Set the waste factor from 5% to 20%; choosing Diagonal 45° layout automatically adds an extra 5%.
Tile Gap / Spacing
For tiles, enter the grout gap in mm so the effective tile footprint is factored into the count.
Exclude Areas
Subtract columns, cabinets, and islands from the floor area; each appears on the room preview.
Multi-Room Support
Add rooms in tabs, each with its own shape and dimensions, and get totals plus a per-room breakdown.
Live Room Preview
A real-time SVG drawing shows the room shape and excluded areas as you change the dimensions.
Material Comparison
Compare up to 3 materials side by side with pieces, boxes, and cost; the cheapest option is highlighted.
Skirting / Baseboard
Auto-calculates the room perimeter minus door openings, with an optional price per metre for skirting cost.
Underlay Recommendation
For wood-based floors, it suggests underlay at 105% of the floor area to allow for overlaps.
Cost Estimation
Enter price per m² and optional labour cost to see material, labour, and total cost for the project.
Auto-Save & Restore
Your rooms, materials, and cost inputs are saved automatically and restored when you come back.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate how much flooring I need?
Enter your room shape and dimensions and the calculator works out the floor area, then multiplies it by your waste factor to get the area you should actually buy. From there it shows the number of pieces and boxes for the material you selected.
How much extra flooring should I buy?
A waste factor of 10% is standard for simple rectangular rooms. For complex shapes, many cuts, or diagonal installation, increase it to 15-20%. The waste factor slider handles this, and Diagonal 45° layout adds an extra 5% automatically.
How many boxes of flooring do I need?
Set Pieces per Box to match your product packaging. The calculator divides the total pieces needed by that number and rounds up to whole boxes, since you cannot buy a partial box. It also shows the coverage one box provides.
What does "Diagonal 45°" mean?
Diagonal layout installs the flooring at a 45-degree angle to the walls for a striking pattern. It needs more edge cuts and therefore more material, so the calculator adds an extra 5% to your waste factor when you choose it.
Why does the tile gap matter?
Tiles are laid with grout gaps between them, which makes each tile's effective footprint larger. A 3mm gap on a 600×600mm tile increases the area each tile covers, so you need slightly fewer tiles than if they were placed edge to edge.
What is underlay and when do I need it?
Underlay is a thin padding layer installed beneath wood-based floors (hardwood, laminate, engineered wood) for cushioning, sound, and moisture protection. The calculator recommends underlay at 105% of the floor area to cover overlaps at the edges.
How does multi-room calculation work?
Click Add Room to create extra rooms, each with its own shape, dimensions, and exclude areas, organised in tabs. The calculator totals every room and shows a per-room breakdown, which is handy when ordering materials for a whole project at once.
How accurate is the cost estimate?
The estimate multiplies your price per m² by the area with waste for a material cost, and adds the optional labour cost per m² for a total. It is a planning figure — actual costs vary with supplier pricing, delivery, and installation complexity.
Is my data saved?
Yes. Your rooms, material settings, and cost inputs are saved automatically in your own browser and restored on your next visit. Use the Reset button to clear everything and start fresh.
