What Is the Flooring Calculator?
The Flooring Calculator helps you estimate the exact amount of flooring material needed for any room. Whether you're installing hardwood, laminate, tile, vinyl, or carpet, this tool calculates the number of pieces, boxes, and total cost — so you buy the right amount without waste or shortages.
Works With Any Room Shape
Not all rooms are simple rectangles. This calculator supports 5 room shapes with real-time SVG preview that updates as you enter dimensions:
Rectangle
L-Shape
U-Shape
T-Shape
Trapezoid
Multiple Material Types
Choose from pre-configured material sizes or enter custom dimensions for precise calculations:
Wood-Based Flooring
Natural and engineered wood options
- Hardwood (90×900mm)
- Laminate (198×1218mm)
- Engineered Wood (190×1900mm)
Tile Options
Ceramic and porcelain in various sizes
- Ceramic Tile (300×300mm)
- Porcelain Tile (600×600mm, 800×800mm)
- Custom tile dimensions
Vinyl Flooring
Flexible and water-resistant options
- Vinyl Plank
- Vinyl Tile
- Sheet Vinyl
Other Materials

How to Use the Flooring Calculator
Set Up Your Room
- Select your room shape — Rectangle, L-Shape, U-Shape, T-Shape, or Trapezoid
- Choose your measurement unit — meters, centimeters, feet, or inches
- Enter the room dimensions and watch the SVG preview update in real time
Exclude Obstacles
If your room has columns, built-in cabinets, or kitchen islands, expand the Exclude Areas section. Add each obstacle's width and height — the calculator subtracts these from the total area automatically.
Choose Material & Settings
- Select your flooring material from the dropdown (sizes are pre-filled)
- Set pieces per box to match your product packaging
- Choose layout direction — Standard or Diagonal 45° (adds 5% extra waste)
- Adjust the waste factor slider (5-20%) based on room complexity
- For tiles, set the gap/spacing in mm

Optional: Multi-Room Calculation
Click Add Room to calculate multiple rooms at once. Each room can have its own shape, dimensions, and exclude areas. The calculator totals everything across all rooms, providing a comprehensive project overview.
Optional: Skirting & Cost
Expand Skirting / Baseboard to calculate wall trim length. Enter the number of doors and their width — the perimeter is calculated automatically. Add material and labor prices for a complete cost estimate including installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much extra flooring should I buy?
A waste factor of 10% is standard for straightforward rectangular rooms. For rooms with complex shapes, many cuts, or diagonal installation, increase it to 15-20%. The calculator handles this automatically through the waste factor slider.
What does "Diagonal 45°" mean?
Diagonal layout installs flooring at a 45-degree angle to the walls. It creates a visually striking pattern but requires more cuts at the edges, resulting in more waste. The calculator adds an extra 5% to your waste factor when this option is selected.
Parallel to Walls
- Less material waste
- Faster installation
- Standard 10% waste
Angled Pattern
- More visual impact
- More edge cuts
- 15% waste factor
Why does the tile gap matter?
Tiles are installed with gaps (grout lines) between them. The gap spacing affects how much area each tile effectively covers. A 3mm gap on a 600×600mm tile increases the effective footprint, meaning you need slightly fewer tiles than if they were placed edge-to-edge.
Common gap sizes:
- 1-2mm: Rectified porcelain tiles (minimal grout lines)
- 3-5mm: Standard ceramic and porcelain tiles
- 6-10mm: Natural stone or rustic tiles
What is underlay and when do I need it?
Underlay is a thin padding layer installed beneath wood-based flooring (hardwood, laminate, engineered wood). It provides cushioning, sound insulation, and moisture protection. The calculator recommends underlay area at 105% of your floor area to account for overlaps at the edges.
Sound Insulation
Reduces footstep noise and impact sound transmission
Moisture Barrier
Protects flooring from subfloor moisture
Comfort
Adds cushioning and thermal insulation
How does multi-room calculation work?
Click "Add Room" to create additional rooms. Each room has its own shape, dimensions, and exclude areas. The calculator sums up all rooms to give you a total material requirement. This is useful for whole-house or multi-area projects where you want to order all materials at once.
How accurate is the cost estimation?
The cost estimation multiplies your entered price per m² by the total area with waste. It gives a material-only estimate. For a complete budget, add the optional labor cost per m². Note that actual costs may vary based on supplier pricing, delivery, and installation complexity.
Cost factors to consider:
- Material price per m² or per box
- Delivery and handling fees
- Installation labor costs
- Subfloor preparation
- Underlay and adhesives
- Skirting boards and trim
- Removal of old flooring
Is my data saved?
Yes, all your inputs are automatically saved in your browser. When you return to the calculator, your room data, material settings, and cost inputs are restored. Use the Reset button to clear everything and start fresh.
