Count characters, words, sentences, and paragraphs instantly as you type. Check your text against platform limits for Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and more.

Character Counter for Words, Sentences & Platform Limits

This character counter instantly tallies the characters, words, sentences, and paragraphs in your text as you type. It also estimates reading time, speaking time, and AI tokens, so a single paste tells you everything about your text's length.

Whether you are trimming a tweet, fitting a meta description, or sizing up a script, you can set a platform limit and watch a live progress bar tell you exactly how much room is left. It is built for content creators, marketers, social media managers, SEO specialists, copywriters, and students who write to a length.

Private by design: every count runs in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never uploaded, stored, or logged, so it is safe to paste sensitive or confidential content.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many characters are in my text?

Paste or type your text and the Characters stat shows the total instantly. Characters are counted exactly as they appear, including letters, numbers, symbols, punctuation, and spaces.

Does the count include spaces?

Yes. The main Characters count includes every space. A separate No Spaces stat shows the count with all whitespace removed, so you can see both at once.

What is the difference between the with-spaces and without-spaces counts?

The Characters count includes spaces, tabs, and line breaks, while the No Spaces count strips out all whitespace. Most social platforms count spaces, but some technical limits do not, so the two figures cover both cases.

Do punctuation marks count as characters?

Yes. Punctuation marks such as commas, periods, and emoji-free symbols are all individual characters, so they are included in the Characters count just like letters and numbers.

How do I count characters for a Twitter/X or SMS limit?

Open the platform menu and choose a preset like Twitter/X Post (280) or SMS (160). A progress bar then shows how close you are: it stays green under 80% of the limit, turns yellow as you approach it, and turns red once you go over.

Is the word count included too?

Yes. Words appear right next to Characters as a primary statistic, alongside sentences and paragraphs. Words are counted as text separated by spaces, so you get a full picture of length in one place.

How are reading and speaking time estimated?

Reading time uses an average of 200 words per minute, a standard rate for adults reading online. Speaking time uses 150 words per minute, typical for presentations. Both are estimates, so actual times vary with content and pace.

What are AI tokens and how are they counted?

AI tokens are the units language models use to process text. This tool estimates them at roughly 4 characters per token, a common average for GPT-style models, to help you gauge API costs. Actual token counts vary by model and language.

Is my text stored or sent anywhere?

No. All counting happens in your browser with JavaScript. Your text never leaves your device and is not stored, transmitted, or logged, so you can use the tool with confidence for sensitive content.
