How to Use the Abacus
Pick an abacus type
Use the type selector to choose Soroban (1/4) or Suanpan (2/5). Soroban is recommended for beginners because each rod maps directly to a single decimal digit. Switching type resets the beads to zero.
Move the beads
Click an upper bead to toggle it toward or away from the beam — each is worth 5. Click a lower bead to activate it and every bead between it and the beam; click an active one to send it and the beads above it back. Each is worth 1.
Adjust the rods
Use the + and − buttons next to Rods to set anywhere from 7 to 17 columns (13 by default). Each rod is labeled with its place value, from ones up to quadrillions, so larger numbers stay easy to read.
Try practice mode
Open Practice Mode, pick Easy (2 digits), Medium (4 digits), or Hard (7 digits), then build the target number on the beads and tap Check Answer. A correct answer rolls a new challenge automatically while your score and streak keep climbing.

How do I use an abacus online?
Click the beads on the virtual abacus. Move upper beads toward the beam for groups of 5 and lower beads for the remaining 1s, and the current value appears instantly above the abacus. There is nothing to install — just open the page and start clicking.
What do the beads mean — heaven vs earth?
The horizontal beam splits each rod into two decks. The upper deck ("heaven") holds beads worth 5 each, and the lower deck ("earth") holds beads worth 1 each. A bead only counts when it is pushed toward the beam. The total is the sum of every active bead across all rods, multiplied by each rod's place value.
How do I read place value on a soroban?
Each rod is one place value, increasing from right to left: the rightmost rod is ones, the next is tens, then hundreds, and so on. This simulator labels every rod (1, 10, 100, 1K… up to quadrillions) so you can read large numbers at a glance. To show 7, for example, push 1 upper bead (5) and 2 lower beads (2): 5 + 2 = 7.
What is the difference between Soroban and Suanpan?
The Soroban (Japanese) has 1 upper bead and 4 lower beads per rod, mapping cleanly to digits 0–9. The Suanpan (Chinese) has 2 upper beads and 5 lower beads, so a single rod can hold more than 9. Soroban is the easier starting point because it lines up directly with our decimal system.
Can I add and subtract on the virtual abacus?
Yes. The abacus is fully functional, so you can perform real addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division by moving beads with standard abacus techniques. The running value display lets you check your result at every step.
